Myspace profile? It could cost you your next job

I have done this actually when looking for temps. Good way to see the character of a person but also a great way to bypass the temp agency. :D

how do employers know they got the right guy for example im sure there are loads of john smiths in london born in 1982 or something

It might not work for ones like that. But there is a good chance you might have their email which might be the same as their registered email on a social networking site. Could find it that way.
 
er - what info would they base their decision on? you have a lot of online friends? :S you dont look to great on a photo? when your drunk you do silly things?

honestly if they are using that then they could be possibly turning down really good candidates. people keep their personal life seperate from their work life and its of no business of work to dig into their personal space. Even as a judgement of character - a profile online in no way reflects your real life personality or presence. I have put up some really wacky stuff in the past, but Im more mature than most. I will leave this post with the classic.
