Myspace profile? It could cost you your next job

the girlfriends sister was offered a job as an account manager for a fairly large company. During the interview they asked her a question about a friend of hers (who happened to have worked at the company but has now left the country). She said on her facebook about them asking this question and that "she hadn't seen her in ages, she's like well left and stuff - dimwits. haha" - or something along those lines. and got fired for it.

You can look at it like bad mouthing the company or perhaps disclosing interview technique. but it's pretty harmless and just goes to show how something so simple can have big consequences. so remember kids - always use protection

Guy on here lost his place for getting into Police traning because he wrongly worded a statement about the recruitment process on a forum.

Unless you have anonymity, there is no point bad mouthing your employer, especially on a Social Networking site.

All very true. Especially if it's about the police!

Exactly why I don't sign up to social networking websites. I find it a good idea to keep online and offline life seperate.

+1 ... Posting pics on facebook of you getting smashed with mates generally isn't a good idea!

If you don't want information in the public domain, don't put it there. If you do, then don't act all surprised and shocked when you are judged by it. It's utter naivety to think anything else.

We've done it at work to be honest. It can change your perception of people looking at their web personas especially before an interview. Sort of started off as a joke to see if the young lads had one (trainee post) and then we started discovering it does open up a whole lot of info on people. Problem can be trying to decide if it's people playing about on the web or if they are actually like that.

uhmm so their private/social life should be up for judgement on whether they are good at the job?

Doesnt have anything to do with it surely...lol

next thing you know we'll have employers only choosing blondes and blue eyed folk.....

Yes, when it's your business with your profit margins on the line you will want respectable people for the job, not some louts who trash Lotus Elise’s.

I recently made my profiles a bit more docile, as i expect the Uni's I'm applying to, to do searches. You can only find me if you put my hotmail account into Google anyway, and thats not the email i use for important things! So im not on the internet if i don't want to be ;) :p

you can change that in your privacy settings too. you don't have to have it so that people in your network can see your profile

This thread enouraged me to finally close the MySpace account I don't use, and to set my Facebook to more secure privacy settings (had it all open and free for all !)

it's not rocket science, don't post crap on your own 'wall' if you use your real name

as long as you're not in a pile of sick in your profile picture, i can't see what's so bad about it

As long as you're not actually like a complete nob jockey on Facebook/Myspace, what have you got to hide? oooo there are pictures of you getting smashed, so what? doesn't it show you have a healthy social life and aren't a bedroom hermit?
