Hi

I am working in South Africa for the next few months, and me and a few workmates are thinking of heading up to Namibia over Easter... Who has been there? What is it like? Any tips etc? We are thinking of staying in Swakopmund and seeing the namib desert and perhaps heading up the Fish River Canyon and going up to the Skeleton Coast.

Not really looking to do the whole safari park thing and have already been to national parks like Pillanesburg/ Kreuger in ZA where I have seen everything :)

Also looking to head up to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe in May- time but that's for another thread :D

Thanks

True, everyone I've spoken to from SA wants to leave.
Well shows how much you lot know doesn't it?

NOT everyone wants to leave at all... Absolutley nothing wrong with South Africa, racism towards whites is not prevelant, and it's only dangerous if you're stupid.

Thanks Paulus- look forward to it.

I can 200% guarentee you that I know more about SA than you ever will. I spent 3 years living there at a young age (11-14) and own 2 properties out in Somerset West, Western Cape. My sister moved there working for GE after uni and moved back here within 3 weeks. THREE WEEKS. She chose not to risk being hi-jacked, raped, of possibly killed on a daily basis. It's brilliant for investment at the moment due to the World Cup being there in 2010 and my properties price's have been climbing steadily, but I'll never advise anyone to move there.

So, I reitirate, Most people from SA i know or speak to, wants to leave. Talk to some South Africans, they love their country and all the natural beauty that goes along with it, but they mostly agree there's no feature there for them

Rubbish, South Africa is quickly becoming one of the prime holiday locations in the world. Ethnic tension is at an all time low and access to townships without certain death has dropped.

Over the past few years, the SA government has employed many measures to combat crime and slowly but surley it's starting to work. My day worked there for 6 months and now can't wait until he retires so he can move back.

Sure crime is still rampant but as long as to locate to a statistcally safe area and stay smart, it's no dangerous than east london at 2am.

I can't believe people are STILL badmouthing south africa. My mates couldn't believe it when I told them in a few years time, me and my dad are going to land rover our way up through africa.

EDIT: any of the dutch settlements are wonderous places to live

EDIT2: I've never actually been to Namibia but I'd love to go. The best way to attack africa on your first overland travel is to follow the standard tour routes. If you do get into trouble, help is never far behind

i did a tour, driving from kenya down to south africa. (keyna, uganda, tanzania, malawi, zambia, zimbabwe, botswana, namibia and south africa)

swakopmund in namibia was totally amazing. the sand dunes are like something from another world. one of the best days there, we did sandboarding (like snowboarding) in the morning, quad biking in the afternoon and then a skydive at sunset followed by a barbq and then on to a club.

it was a while ago now but can highly recommend it.

as for south africa, i actually felt quite safe there. I was in cape town and moved along the garden route staying in different hostels by the sea.

probablly a little different in jo'burg. but i wouldnt let it stop you seeing such a beautiful country.

South Africa, is a great country! I have lived there for a couple of years on and off. Have family in South Africa/Zimbabwe/Zambia, and my mother still owns a house in South Africa.

I long to go back there as soon as possible, its much better then the UK by far (lived in UK for longer). Most people that want to leave are old and don't know how to get on with black South Africans. I myself have to problems and have even visited and stayed in a township. The people are very friendly and kind when you get to know them.

You just have to be smart as to where you go and who your with. Of course not all of South Africa is perfect, just like the UK.

Anyway not been to Namibia but you will enjoy it ;)
