Either the
Canon 7D
or
Nikon D7000

Canon
pros - able to share lenses with my partner, ever so slightly more familiar with the brand, cheaper lens compared to nikon?
Cons - more expensive outlay for a camera which seems to be very similar to much cheaper d7000

Nikon
pros- better bang for buck by far initially, double sd slots
cons - not being able to share lenses, more expensive lenses?, less familiarity

ive done quite a lot of reading etc but cant choose. Its hard to justify the 7d as its much more expensive than the nikon, but of course this is insignificant if lenses overall are cheaper with the canon ecosystem.

Then theres the sharing with my GF, although many times we will probably want to use same lens type if we go somewher together it cant be a bad thing to have same lens mount, say if we go to a mature reserve with a macro lens and distance. This would be especially relevant initially before getting more lenses

So the situation with having two people doing it makes the question a little more complicated

Yeah it is quite old. Im guessing the new 7d would be significantly more expensive than the current 7d is now?
There seems to be a deluge of cameras just below this price point

I can see that yes, I also thought that. If we are both out in same place we will probably want same lens type.

I have seen the difference in pictures from both cameras and if anything the nikon seems a little more saturated and Tbh I'm not sure what I prefer

This Weekend I'm going to try and find somewhere to try the cameras physically as I don't know how they compare. If I prefer the canon it will make the choice easy. However I don't want to find the nikon better as it will complicate things, particularly the sharing aspect

On lenses side of things I think what I'm most interested in is macro and distance, especially macro shots tbh.
I may end up getting a canon 100mm if I end up with canon fairly soon with the gf getting a 70-200 of some spec

Pretty sure I'm getting the 7d.

I don't think I'll bother with a starter kit

As a first dslr what should I get as a first lens?
I either want it to be macro or distance.

I've decided not to get a new console at all so have about 600 ish for a lens

i have been reading a bit about macro lenses
unfortunately i want to snap insects etc and have read about the distance limitations. The cost of the lenses appropriate for this seem above my price range. i dont know if the 100mm is appropriate.

I went into currys today and had a hold of both cameras

i did like the feel of the canon better
the price difference was immense. The canon was more than 2x as expensive rhan the nikon.
It even looks as if d7100 will be cheaper than the 7d

but i guess i should go with the canon anyway.

ill be getting one from abroad yes,

i did look at the 60D but thought most reviews seem to say the 7D was a decent step up over it.

Im wary about buying used as this is my first cam

When I held both I much prefered the canon tbh.
The price of the d7100 is the hard thing, it's about 70 pound more

I just looked at the 70d and apart from the video it seems pretty similar to to 7d
Not sure I want to miss summer waiting for it

EDT
Paying for this tomorrow unless anyone can convince me otherwise :p

I am going to wait for the 70D price, if thats right, i will wait for comparisons between that and the 7D

The 7d mkii is much too much

I should stop looking at nikons, every one seems cheaper than its respective canon grr

BUT i have committed, im hoping canon at least hold some resale value!

Edit, i should also ask what lenses to start looking at?
I have one i have already ordered

Had it not been for my partner having canon i thhink id have got the 7100

But i will probably end up doing little low light/landscapes which makes me feel better

FYI, the first reliable sensor emasurements are out
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Pu...on-EOS-70D-vs-60D-sensors-Incremental-advance

very slight bump over previous gen Canon sensor so that is a little disappointing. Personally on the Canon side I would hunt for a second hand 7D and check the sensor is OK.

yes, from the sounds of it they have changed other things over the actual sensor

the dual focus, lcd screen being touch, swivel etc

i was a little disappointed myself, but tbh i am a little reluctant to get a second hand 7D as there are probably a lot of potential issues i wouldnt immediately spot.

Actually, reading that again, i dont think i can stomach the cost for such a mediocre camera, the nikon absolutely kills it

Personally I wouldn't ever get a 7D, with Canon I would look to go FF. Sure the 7D is fast and they have a deep buffer but that about it and I use neither of those. Switched over to D7000 instead (loved that camera, the sensor was AMAZING for an apsc) and then upgraded from there. If Sony make some major improvements in the tech of it's camera bodies as has been rumoured, then I may switch to Sony and throw out my tripod.
I don't know why neither Canon or Nikon can't offer body stabilisation, especially when Olympus can do it so well.

im tempted to get an average canon and not buy anything else for it until something gives

i keep looking at the canon stuff and seeing a price tier above others

i cant really justify FF and nor do i think it would be the best for what i want to do
I was really really hoping the 70D would be more than what it is.

It's 850 from digital rev now, still a lot more than the 7d and d7100.. Definitely getting a grey

If I had a camera now I would wait but I have nothing

yeah i know, ill get it on Ccard so if there are any delivery problems at least it will be ok
also Digital rev seem to have a good rep
there is also Hdew cameras who have a uk presence, but will probably go with digital rev

the 70d is 849 now on digi rev so i might get it next week,
canon have the 65mm 5x macro too

Is the 60d vs the 70d pretty similar except for the video?
It's about half the price!

Thanks for that. I'm not sure if that warrants a near doubling in price

Maybe a 60d and a something else as opposed to a 70d

Yes, i have read a few articles on the 70D not being much better than the 60D for IQ
I will use raw
I feel the flip out screen could be useful on some occasions but am not fussed by the touchscreen
Considering i probably wont have a 400mm for quite some time (due to the cost) the main photography will be macro and night/creative things (the 100-400 for birds as you guys have said 200 is too short)

Canon have made it very difficult for me to choose due to adding features as opposed to improving IQ. I may be wrong but i dont think i will be doing much video at least to start.
The nikon niggle still hasnt gone..just the thing of my partner using canon and the super macro lens from canon stop me getting the d7100
