NAS and surveillance advice

@WJA96 I've had my camera delivered today with the junction box and pole mount. I've been having a play, seems easy to setup and connect to via browser and mobile app.

I did not realize the junction box did not come with a cable gland. What size do I need? I think it's 25mm but just wanted to check :D

Excellent, I will do that then instead. My next question was going to be what do I wrap around the cable to make it fill the gland :D

Sweet. Loads more bits have turned up today. 100m cable reel and one of the two pole mounts I ordered. I found a very small pole mount online from Ireland but they would not ship to the UK, I then found another on ebay but when I placed the order it got cancelled (turns out also based in Ireland). After much searching I found a UK seller and one from the US. Both seem to have been shipped though, typical. The UK one has arrived anyway.

It looks like I can now mount it inline with my fence on the other side of that black trunking (my AC pipes to my office). The supplied metal straps are too big to fit to the mount so I will buy some smaller ones from screwfix with a load of other bits I need. I should have plenty of bits and bobs left over for when I come to do the next camera install :D

Yup, I had a play with it yesterday and looked at all the settings etc. I scared the wife a few times with the alarm going off in the house whilst I was testing the 'human' setting! I love the quick disable on the phone app.

I've now terminated the recently delivered external cat6 cable in to the camera using the 8mm method in the blanking screw as you suggested, worked a treat - thanks! I have tested the cable with the camera connected and all seems to be working ok.

I have literally just put my order in for a few bits from screwfix, I mainly just need suitably sized stainless worm drive clamps so I can attached it securely to the wall bracket. Hopefully my brother can foot the ladder for me tomorrow so I can get it installed

Once I have the bracket and camera fixed to it, I can then make my final decision of where I will put the cable entry. As in, if I go with 1x 22mm hole (for 4 cables total), or 1x 8mm (1 cable for current camera) and 1x 22mm (for future 3 cables I plan to install). I may even go all out and remove my gutter down pipe and drill the 22mm behind that, so it is totally hidden once I replace the downpipe.

Don’t use the Motion Detection/Smart Motion Detection - turn on IVS and use IVS/Intrusion detection instead. It’s much more reliable in terms of false alerts.

Oh ok, I have now found the IVS settings. I will set that up when I can. I have no means to record anything atm. I will probably buy a NAS next month, maybe just the DS220+ to keep costs down. I think I will no doubt end up with a dedicated NVR so no point going OTT with the NAS.

My brother was not able to help today so I thought I would have a go on my own. I managed to wedge the ladder in between some slabs on my patio. Used some bosch multi construction drill bits, went through the mortar / some brick very easilly (without hammer) considering I was at the top of my reach, I am well impressed with this drill bits!

Cable temp through the window to set up the angle. I need to think about what I want to do with regards to cable entry. I think for this, it would look much better if I put a hole nearest the AC trunking (on the right side of it) in the motar, in line with the top bracket bolt. That will keep all exposed cable very short and neat. There will probably be a wood noggin in the way if I go any higher.

I am actually really pleased with how much view it gives. I did not expect it to see the end of the brick wall on the top right. The main thing, it covers all windows and doors at the back of the house, and access from the side of the house.

All done for today with the rear camera install. It took me longer to pull the cable through from outside, it kept finding it's way in to a void between the brick and the timber frame. Mother trucker...

I will probably just use some clear silicon to seal the hole but I gave my last tube to my dad  I put quite an upward angle on the hole so I am not worried about any water ingress.

Looks very lonely in there by itself. Although the entry point comes in from above the back box, I thought best to route all cables from underneath to save strain on the data point.

I did think about building my own but it will take up a lot more space. I might still consider it though so thanks for the suggestion!

I do in fact have a spare old PC that I haven't used for a few years. Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8GHz, 8GB DDR3, Asus P5Q-EM, corsair HX520, fractal design arc mini). @TangoEchoAlpha Would it be worth using or is it too ancient?

@WJA96. I thought I had set the IVS settings correctly (with intrusion, drawing an area), I even selected 'object filter' 'effective object' = Human. However, I have just noticed that my alarm is going off whilst my boiler is running and causing small clouds of white smoke. I've just disabled my intrusion rule and enabled the smart motion detection again and its stopped causing that to go off.

Any advice?

P.S I noticed that before when I was testing the intrusion alarm, it would not always set the alarm off even though I was standing and moving inside the area that I drew. Is that normal? Perhaps the camera can't pick me up right at the edges of the drawn area?

Thanks for that @TangoEchoAlpha. I think my old computer wont be up to the job so a new system will be needed. I will think about it, might be fun to do as I enjoy building system. Maybe a bit of learning curve to get everything setup though.

First, you need to set IVS to on. Without that, it won’t work. That’s in the Smart Plan menu and it’s a big square box icon. Make sure you save the screen before you exit.

Then, in the IVS menu add an IVS rule and pick Intrusion from the drop-down box. Select ‘cross’ and ‘appear’, ‘specific’ and ‘human’.

The add the area. Left click to start the area and left click each marked point. Right click once the box is closed. If you’ve done it right the box should remain on the screen.

Then save it.

And that should work. The white water vapour sounds more like a motion detection alert. Make sure it’s turned off on the camera and the notifications are switched off for Motion detection and SMD+ in the app. In the app you need to add notifications for AI->Intrusion.

If you want a bit of help I’m only in Thetford so it’s easy enough to pop down for 20 minutes.

Technically all you need in terms of storage is a micro-SD card. I like the Synology Surveillance Station system, and Dahua obviously make their own NVR units. Get an NVR-xxxx-I unit for intelligence or a -X unit for quite a bit more intelligence. If you’re building your own then Blue Iris is the usual recommendation but Dahua supply DSS for free and it’s pretty good.

That's very kind of you to offer your help! Hopefully we can get it setup without causing you a trip but I may take you up on that!

Just to confirm, in the 'Smart Motion Detection' menu, that option needs to be unticked?

I have now set the 'smart plan' button to on (it's gone orange - I did not have that on before).

Here are the settings in the IVS rule menu. I've unchecked the 'audio linkage' as I dont want the alarm going nuts until everything is setup! :D

I have a few more questions about the period 'Setting'. I don't want the alarm going off when I am at home and in the garden.

There are two period 'Setting' boxes under the IVS menu, I've set both to the same for now. What is the difference, should they both be set the same?

Let's just say I want the alarm to only go off between 8pm - 6am, is this how it should be setup in both period 'Setting'?

Re your last post (LDC), I lose quite a bit of view when that is enabled. I will see how things go before enabling it, as long as it doesn't interfere with the detection I will leave it off to give a wider view for now.

@WJA96

Noted, I've pulled the box in about 1cm all around!

I bought the 3.6mm version (box says 3.6mm too). I hadn't noticed the curve until you mentioned it :D

Something is not right, the alarm is going off when I go outside even with the schedule set. I am clicking save literally after I do any single change on all the things we've discussed. Could there be something else I have missed?

What is the 'alarm' menu below the IVS menu for? That is currently unticked.

Ah I think I have cracked it! Under 'Video Detection', there are two more period 'Setting' options. I've set both the same as the the two period 'setting' in the IVS menu and that seems to have fixed it.

That makes sense. I am glad I bought it though despite the learning curve. I look forward to getting the second one now :D

@WJA96. I forgot to say, thanks again for all your help earlier!

I've been pressure washing outside and the camera has not been alarming due to the schedule I set. I popped out at 8 and it went off (I forgot to set the audible alarm, but the red/blue lights flashed at me). However, I also noticed that it was alarming when bugs were flying around the camera. I had another look in the options and spotted the 'Video Detection' menu. I have now disabled that setting and so far I haven't seen the alarm going off. Was this something else I should have also had unchecked when using IVS?

P.S with that setting disabled, the alarm still goes off when I go outside.

I sync the time to my computer yesterday and I just noticed it was already an hour out! I've done as you have suggested, thanks :D

I can't see the motion detection and SMD+ options in the mobile app. I will google where to find it in a bit.

I am at work atm so will double check the other settings you mention when I get home later ;)

P.S the alarm didn't go off last night which was good :D

@WJA96

I had a look at the settings and the disarming option is set to 'close'. I couldn't find any settings in the phone app re motion detection and SMD+.

Going back to the front camera to mainly cover my garage and gate, you suggested before I could mount a large bracket to the side of the garage and have the camera essentially above the gate type location. I've had a thought...

Rather than mount a huge bracket to the side of the garage, what about if I remove this piece of timber from my fence and replace it with a bulkier taller piece (maybe 300-400mm taller so its out of reach). I could then mount the camera (and similar bracket to the rear) to that and it would be right at the edge of my property to hopefully give me good coverage of the whole front of the house?

I am going to be running a cable where the gravel is on the left of the pic below anyway, I could remove the two smaller slabs and run the cable under that (in oval conduit) and up the fence to the camera (I will figure out a way so the cable was not exposed - conduit/slot in the timber etc).

Hah, yeah installing 5 camera's would be great but I am not keen on having all the brackets and cables everywhere (plus the expense of 5 cameras). I saw a house down the road from me and they have 5 camera's, a bit like as you have suggested (it was done quite neat from what i can tell).

I am not a fan of digging either, but removing the gravel shouldn't be too bad. It's not like I am going to be sticking a spade down there so I wont worry about digging it too deep - probably 40mm and put the gravel back on top. I was toying with the ideal of trying to put it in 20mm oval conduit.

With regards to the little L bit of the garden, I have thought of a plan for this too. A bit like my suggestion re installing a bigger bit of timber to the fence by the gate, I could do the same thing at the corner of my garden so I could mount a camera on that which would look in to the little L bit. That way I would only need 3 camera's. I would only do that if I installed a home office in the little L bit though.

My plan will be to run 3 network cables, 2 to the gate area; one going in to the garage in case I ever want a network point in there, one for the gate camera, and finally a third cable along my fence up to the end of the garden for the possible third camera.

I think I've just convinced myself to get one with it this weekend now, at least remove the gravel to see if running a cable like that will work.

*edit* been reading up on conduit in the ground. Yeah, I am not going to bother with putting it in that after all. Seems like more hassle than it's worth.

Pay day is approaching...@WJA96

What are your thoughts on the dahua dome camera's? I am thinking It would be worth me trying one under the eaves on my garage (as close to the side gate as possible without being blocked by the gutter down pipe). This is the one I am looking at, which has the star light tech: Dahua DH-IPC-HDBW3441E-AS Lite.

P.S I managed to remove the stones around the house/garage in preparation for laying the cable, and install a small section of conduit up the side of the garage for the cable entry. I am just really waiting on some more 400mm masonry drills as I only have a 6mm and 22mm (I've bought 10, 14 and 18mm). Once they arrive I can enlarge the 6mm hole to 14mm for the two cables entering the garage.

Which 4k one would you recommend @WJA96?

As I am not sure if it's going to work out ok, I will give your 2MP dome one a try and see how it looks. A cheaper way to have a play without committing to a much more expensive camera. I've messaged in your thread but forgot to tag you.
