NAS options

Hi Guys,

So I haven't ever bought a nas before as they've always been a bit expensive.

I currently have to have a computer on to access my usb drives whilst I am away from my desk.

Which isn't really the cheapest option on power.

So is the best option to buy a nas cradle or a usb to nas converter to get one of my usb drivers nas ready? The latter is only £20-£30 on ebay.

I guess one power supply for the converter and one for the drive defeats the object of being cheap in the long-term.

I am looking for the most efficient method I guess.

Also it needs to be whisper quiet no fan noise etc.

Any ideas?

As a side note do Nas's have windows? or something else?

Bit torrent access would also be great!

Thanks for your help!

I would, if you can afford it, get a dedicated NAS box. You won't regret it.

I have a Synology DS210J (older model now) and it is superb. Uses its own os, called disk station manager, has a bit torrent app and you can also get iphone/android apps for easy online access remotely.

It is virtually inaudible and uses very little power. If I were buying tomorrow I would go for a DS211J or if more flush a DS211 (difference being slightly better spec)

You can also hook up usb drives to it!

The other option is a HP Microserver which is bigger but with the rebate it works out quite reasonable. Or build a dedicated unit and run Windows Home Server or something similar on it OR get a Western Digital or Buffalo NAS Box, normally quite cheap but fomr what I can see quite limited
