Hey there,

I've only recently discovered "NAS" (Network Attached Storage), and I have a few questions about it...

1. Scenario: I have my NAS setup upstairs at home and I'm on a laptop downstairs which is connected to the NAS wirelessly - I want to listen to a music file off my NAS...

Whereas on my main computer, I'll open a music file and it plays instantly - Will there be a delay if I play it on my laptop wirelessly? (I.e. Is it like if I play a song off Spotify?)

2. If there is a delay -- Does the speed of my internet connection effect the delay in which the song plays? And does it change the quality of the song?

3. Scenario: I still have my NAS at home, but this time I'm half way across the world on my laptop in a Starbucks using their free internet connection...

I have Steam installed on my NAS and want to play some Half Life 2... Is this possible?

---

I think that's it - I'm trying to get my head around how it all works, and how I could put it to use in a home environment...

Thanks,

Marky

There will be no delay. Pretty postive the steam thing won't work and even if it did it would only work for very basic games.

Okay! New Scenario! :p

NAS is sat upstairs connected to the wireless router as per use :p

I connect my laptop to the TV downstairs and play a 720p HD movie from the NAS wirelessly...

It's bound to stutter a lot right?

What about if I wanted to watch that same movie in the Starbucks half way across the world?

In your own home, you will probably be able to play the 720p movie okay, all depends on your wireless signal - you need to achieve about 6Mbs throughput on your wireless to prevent stuttering on a 720p file (depends on the encoding)

Anywhere outside of your own network (e.g. Starbucks), you are dependent on the upload speed of your home internet connection, which will not be sufficient unless you are on a very high speed link (upload is generally a lot less than download speed)
