Hi there!

I'm after a NAS drive which functions primarily as a backup and storage solution for multiple PCs in the house so that I don't have to keep firing up my desktop every time I want to access my music or photos. I'd probably also want to stream music from it to the living room via wireless to either my xbox or a laptop. Less interested in the complete media centre jobs which seem to be popping up at the moment.

How good are xbox 360's at streaming content from NAS drives? One from lacie seemed to specifically mention that it could do it without a problem. I would assume that all are more than capable of achieving this and they act like a simple storage server on the network.

I can't believe I used to have a whole separate linux computer for this sort of thing, this solution seems much easier and is only a bit more expensive than buying an external hard drive straight off.

Thanks for any suggestions to go for or to avoid!

Synology ones are great - expensive but loads of features (lots of firmware updates with tweaks and updates). Streams fine to PS3 and 360.

I'm using a WD MyBook World Edition now, 1TB drive, no RAID. I got it mainly for Sonos (absolutely amazing piece of kit!) but I also backup my PC's to it, it's also sharing pics and videos, streams HD video to PS3 without issue.
