NASA Has Released The Largest Picture Ever Taken And It Will Shake Up Your Universe

As impressive is that is I think I'll be more impressed when we can start properly imaging planets in orbit around other stars (even close ones) with atleast a basic level of detail.

i was gonna say the same.

Its impressive but its a whole lot of nothing too :P

Amazing though. A milestone for sure.

I wish my feeble ape brain could even begin to imagine the sorts of things going on deep within that galaxy... the sheer size just makes my mind turn to slop.

and people think earth is the only place with life out of an infinite number of planets :S

We can't even see the edge of the universe, we don't even know if there is one, we have no idea how much bigger it could be and we don't even think we have discovered every planet in our own solar system yet since there could be 2 more

Does anyone else's brain start to melt when you think about how big the universe it. I start to get quite anxious trying to understand it (but I kinda like it!)

Most likely yes, but whether there's much intelligent life out there seems to be the biggest question at the moment.

billions of galaxies and we're the only intelligent species :(

pretty damn unlikely.. if anything we're not as intelligent as we'd like to think

Just don't go too deep (that's what she said).

Also is your sig allowed? I thought that Jesus image was a big no no here :D

Many galaxies, particularly old ones have no chance of harbouring life as we know it.

In star systems with planets sitting in the zone where we believe life can only exist there's then the events that need to take place for life to emerge which is also incredibly slim. How long an intelligent civilisation lasts to be discovered by another one is also questionable. The last series Brian Cox did, the very last episode on it summed it all up pretty well.

It's not just how big but also how small.

It was said on a program about the universe/physics I saw at some point that the Planck length, a very very small size and I believe the smallest understandable size, is so small a good way to comprehend how small is thus...

Using a pencil put a very small dot on a piece of paper, a dot that you can just see. If that dot was then expanded to the size of the observable universe the Planck length would be the size of the original dot you drew compared to the expanded dot at its original size and the new dot scaled backwards as well.

I'm sure it was explained far more eloquently than I just paraphrased it.
