Guys I'm starting this 5x5 program a lot of you are doing tomorrow, really excited! Should I start with an empty barbell like the program says? My friend is going to go mad at me hahahaha.

Also how can I add 5lbs which is 2kg each workout when the smallest plates we have is 2.5kg. Should I just add 5kg each workout?

Any advice before I start? I'm loving the simple routine.

You could start with an empty bar, but I think a couple of the chaps on here have worked up from a bit higher.

However, the point is to get your body used to the movements, so an empty bar may be best.

Regarding adding of weight, stick with 2.5kg each time.

Regarding the lifts themselves, I would REALLY encourage you to post videos from the side and behind in the Form Feedback thread as you will get some very good advice from some very knowledgeable people that will save your joints, back and anything else. :)

Yes to starting with the bar and agree with posting form vids. The bar wont be empty for long! :D

You can probably get away with adding +5, but I'd probably invest in your own set of 2.5 plates. I dont think they're that expensive but might be wrong.

it really does depend on your experience with lifting.

Going by what you have posted in the gym rats thread, if you can squat 140x10 then going back to an empty bar is a complete waste of time...

based on his response to my question, was it you sqautting 140x10 his answer makes it out to be him...

My friend said when am I going to start lifting some serious weight so I whacked on another 2x20kg plates on each side for my set (total weight was 40kg lighter than his) afterwards and got 10 reps and also dumped the weight after 10. Not doing that again, I didn't go nearly low enough so I'm gonna stick to lighter weight and go lower.

clearly you guys both need glasses, as he says about 3 posts further up his mate squats 180...

^^ now it would appear i have missed that.

anyway 100kg back to bar is still not ideal, as 100kgx10 is not beginner level

Well that didn't take long.

OP do you even read? In this context 5lb plate = 2.5kg plate. It even says this on the Stronglifts website... read it!

Seriously though read it.

LOL sorry about the confusion with the squat. Come back Skillmister!

I did try 140kg for 10 reps but it was sloppy. I can do 100KG squats so I think I'll start with 30kg. That's going to look so funny with 5kg plates on.

Yep I only bench 60kg but could do 70kg for five reps. I think it's because I used to skate a lot when I was younger so that's why my legs are stronger than my upper body. Used to have a very high jump.

I'll be sure to post some videos and some before/after pictures. I have a picture of me looking REALLY skinny before I started. You can see my ribs lol.

Zefan I know but I can't just put one plate on can I?

Start with 60-70 not 30. Advise is if you consider yourself above beginner level then you should drop to 60ish % of what your able to with for 5 reps. Seeing as you can do 100kg for 10 then 60-70 for 5 would be more then comfortable and use the early sessions to work on your form...

2x1.25kg plates :confused::rolleyes:

What are your 1 rep maxes. even bad squats at 140 x10 should equate to something close to 160.

70x5 on bench would be 85ish

do you deadlift?
