National Anthem

Arnt we oen of the only countrys without an official national anthem?

England's not really a nation though. A home nation perhaps and one in terms of sporting events, but not a separate political and legal state.

Out of the ones mentioned, Jerusalem's my favourite. I love William Blake's poetry. :)

England certainly will not be competing at the Olympics in 2012, which is what this thread seems to be about. We well be there as the United Kingdom, and any anthem should reflect all four of the countries which make up the UK.

On a slightly different subject, I hope that the letters used to describe us are not GBR, as they were in the recent winter olympics, as GBR excludes one of our four countries.

We need something rousing musically, stuff the lyrics. See: Hymn of the Soviet Union.

I'd defend Leningrad to the last man with an anthem like that
Aye, the Soviet Union National Anthem is a thing of beauty. Can't understand any of the lyrics but it's an incredible song :)

Other than that, Jerusalem gets my vote :p

edit: Hunt for Red October is good as well :)

Jerusalem would be good, but there is little green or pleasant about England :P and its not much use as a National anthem for anyone else but the English.
How about "the JCB song" since as a nation what we do most is lament bygone days and talk **** :)

What does the R stand for? I assume it's NI it's excluding.

In the broadest sense of the word Cornwall is a nation ;)
A nation doesn't have to refer to a political entity although it normally does.

I've posted this before with a poll between Rule Brittania, Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory.

Think LoHaG won but I can't remember.
Not too long ago either, I think it was between Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem.

Personally I think Jerusalem is a great anthem for England and Rule Britania for the UK.

When Britain first, at heaven's command,
Arose from out the azure main,
Arose, arose, arose from out the azure main,
This was the charter, the charter of the land,
And guardian Angels sung this strain:

Rule Britannia!
Britannia rule the waves.
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

The nations, not so blest as thee,
Must in their turn, to tyrants fall,
Must in their turn, must in their turn, to tyrants fall,
While thou shalt flourish, shalt flourish great and free,
The dread and envy of them all.

(Chorus)
Rule Britannia!
Britannia rule the waves.
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
More dreadful, from each foreign stroke,
More dreadful, more dreadful from each foreign stroke
As the loud blast that tears the skies,
Serves but to root thy native oak.

Fantastic singing it whilst waving your union jack with 7,000 other people at an open air concert while a spitfire is flying past.

The R doesn't actually stand for anything in that context it's just an abbreviation they use for Great Britain (GBR). The problem is that Great Britain doesn't include NI. The UK, United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland, does though:)

So how do we go about getting it changed, because i too think we could have a better one.

No disrespect to the Queen but Jerusalem or Land of Hope and Glory are fantastic, as someone said, they make the hairs on their neck stand up with huge audiences singing them.

I've also always thought the great war-time classic "There'll always be an England" was a nice song, probably not Anthem material though.

There'll always be an England,
While there's a country lane,
Wherever there's a cottage small
Beside a field of grain.
There'll always be an England,
While there's a busy street,
Wherever there's a turning wheel
A million marching feet.
Red, white and blue,
What does it mean to you?
Surely you're proud
Shout it aloud.
Britons awake!
The Empire too,
We can depend on you,
Freedom remains
These are the chains
Nothing can break.
There'll always be an England,
And England shall be free,
If England means as much to you
As England means to me.
This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in a silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall,
Or as a moat defensive to a house
Against the envy of less happier lands
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm
This England
