National speed limit to be cut to 50mph on "most roads" as early as 2010

Another notch on what is the "Reasons to move to Australia" tally chart.

*sigh and  from me

I strongly suggest you research Australia some more. They are even more insane with speed enforcement than the UK are. The classic example is the road called "90 mile straight" which goes through the desert with no towns, villages, footpaths or anything on it. It's a 90kph (55mph) limit and they enforce the limit on there regularly, presumably because it's a nice little earner.

I'll take it :) :p

Ah yes, but then perhaps a population density mixed with road accidents chart would show a clearer picture for all the countries.

I imagine a big red hotspot in the citys and not much in the wilderness!

Well i think that's kind of obvious, I'd expect a road with 10,000 users a day to have a lot more accidents than a road with 100 users a day.

If it was normalised data, ie accidents per 1000 users then it might be more informative.

That's it. I've never voted for anyone in my life, but come next general elections I know Cameron is getting my first vote. I can only recommend everyone else on the forum to do the same thing, it's time for a change from this pathetic and weak government.

Think I got done by one of those "Community Speed Check" things earlier. Expecting a letter to tell me to slow down soon. Grr.

a road near me is dual carriageway , 60mph mostly , then 50 mph - for no reason , with cop cars enforcing it , and van based speed cameras , yet at the junctions to the left and right - are country lanes with blind bends , dips and crests , where a car can "dissapear " , and travel 10 mph - often more ! faster , than a long straight dual carriageway - mental

The little tiny twisty single track lanes with grass growing down the middle never have any accidents because nobody uses them except for farmers and a few locals who know the area. Nobody in their right mind does 60 down them.

People who don't get why these are 60 in the first place need to understand the history of the NSL sign. It used to be the "derestricted" sign and meant that the road had no speed limit but instead the driver was to use their own skill and judgement. This was as opposed to a "restricted" road which would typically be limited to 30 mph. Restricted roads are used in populated areas like towns and villages.

This restricted/derestricted distinction still features heavily in UK traffic legislation and is a cause for a lot of the loopholes that the likes of Nick Freeman use to invalidate speeding tickets. eg if a council apply for a 50 limit on a road but they use the piece of legislation intended for setting a 50 limit on a restricted road when the road was previously derestricted then the 50 limit is invalid because the traffic order dropping the limit to 50 is invalid.

Anyway, the little dirt tracks were derestricted roads because that's the default configuration for them and no-one has ever bothered to change them because it's just not worth it.

How on earth do think this will make a difference? The government has said that it will be left to local decision (the situation for decades). Have the Tories said that they will prevent local councils lowering speed limits? I doubt it: they tend to actually be pretty popular locally, and nearly always occur due to local pressure. So the Tories won't change a thing - it will still be down to local councils.

Looks like I will be riding my motorbike all year round. You can't read my numberplate, but you will be able to identify me. I'll be the one going through the average speeds cameras sticking two fingers up.

. . . right up until the moment that you become a RTA statistic featured on the Darwin Awards.

Stupid, at a time when cars are the safest they have ever been. Also at a time of recession, the country should not be slowing down! Speed = Time = Money

And eight years from now, you'll be saying the same thing about the tory govt.
It doesn't matter who's in charge, they're all terrible.
