Need a Backup device

Thanks guys,

I'm leaning towards the DS213. Like you guys have said the proliant is such a good deal though!! I do like customising things but I think it will be nice having the NAS do everything I need with minimal effort. I could always get the proliant I guess further down the line and use the NAS as a VM datastore.

Does anyone know what the NAS would be like as a web server? Would be good to test some pages out on.

The Synology works perfectly well as a home webserver. The main bottleneck will be your ISP's up speed.
 
Ok so I think I am going with the DS213. What would you guys suggest in terms of hard drives?

I am thinking possibly 2TB x 2 for RAID.

I would go with WD Red's. I had some troubles with WD Greens w/ 4k sectors in my NAS but your mileage may vary. The Red's are NAS specific and reviews show them being worthy of the small premium.

Are these features worth the extra premium? We have no doubts about that, as the extended warranty period (3 years vs. 2 for the Green drives) and 24x7 support, as well as the lower power consumption should pay for itself over the course of the lifetime of the drive. Irrespective of the warranty / RMA possibility, consumers would do well to keep data on any hard drive (including the WD Reds) backed up (if possible, in a different location).

On the basis of our evaluation, we have no reservations in recommending the WD Red lineup as the drives of choice for a NAS system.

Another quick question.

Thinking about this, if I was to use the Proliant microserver. Surely I wouldn't want to have the VM's installed on the same hard drives that will be used for backups?

I have two 3tb red's in my DS713+ in raid 1 and they are fantastic. Can't recommend them enough! Previously ran two greens without problem too.

For me its a big llearning curve but if you enjoy it It's quite interesting.
I'm battling on with it atm.
All my pc's will back up to the server at set time.
The server backs up all these backups to an external Hdd

So you have bbackups of backups
I don't have any raid need
 
Thanks for the responses. My plan for a proliant if I get one would be to install ESXI on it. But the problem is I would want one of the VMs to run a backup system such as WHS11.

Surely I would need to have the backup drivers different to the VM drives?
 
In my server I have

Esxi running from USB drive.
VMs on an SSD.
and then 3x1.5TB drives for storage.

So to answer your question you will need a drive to hold your your VMs - as far as I know.
