Need a car with high MPG!

I had a 1.2 litre corsa when i first past, I swear those cars make fuel as you drive cost naff all in petrol costs!

I think you need a lighter right foot!

You say that, but while a Corsa costs naff all to run, I genuinely cannot remember where or when I last filled the Octavia up... But it was about 600 miles ago and the fuel light isn't on yet. :p

corsa only costs £10 and a packet of crisps to fill up though!

In this thread: People with no idea that fuel tank capacity and running costs are not really related.

I think the Octy only holds 55 litres. :)

590 miles on the trip and a range of 150 miles to go, meaning an average of around 61MPG if the range is accurate. Not bad from a 13 year old boat. Best I ever saw was 66.7MPG over a 120 mile motorway stint.

It's a Skoda Octavia not a long wheelbase XJ - it's hardly a massive boat is it? It's reasonably light, it has a simple yet efficient 1.9 TDI engine, I wouldn't be shocked or surprised that it's economical. It is, after all, the entire point?

Indeed, my car has done 825 miles out of a single £65 or so tank of diesel and it averages 700-750 miles with my driving style.

I have however had to pay for a new clutch and DMF for it which cost me £800. For most people that'd wipe out probably 2 years of fuel cost savings of switching cars in the first place. To be fair though, in 66k miles, that is the only thing I have had to pay for outside of servicing/tyre costs.

I said boat not barge. :D

It handles like a boat.

Depends on the car in terms of those costs though, the Octavia is on 165 nearly 166K with the original clutch and DMF, a new kit is £300 plus fitting, and a single mass conversion kit with a slightly beefier clutch is £350 plus fitting. Plenty of life left in the current ones though, very minimal DMF vibration, and no clutch slip at all.

Best to make sure that its already been done if its a major concern though.

I would just give the corsa a good service then leave ten minutes earlier each day and drive @ 60. Best way you can do it at this budget.

There often more than 10 people on a bus in rush hour, whereas there's normally only one person in most cars....
