Need a new minicab warning contains "spec me"

535 v8 :) i'd imagine taxiing wasnt his only source of income :)

mondy 2.2 looks interesting one i'll have to have a wee read up on

surely a Rwd taxi up in Scotland is a bad idea for the winter? Yes I know we only get 1 or 2 weeks snow, But that's one or two weeks getting stuck or not being able to get to jobs.

Or does a decent set of winter tyres transform the bmw in the snow?

I'd defo be looking at the Skoda if it was me.

What is actually wrong with the Vectra, especially if you were considernig another? Can you not just keep it?

I'm assuming it's too old. IIRC, the cars have to be under a certain age (5 years?) otherwise it won't get a license.

spot on but its 5 years for new plating or 7 year old for current plating,

current veccy expires on the 6th March 2013 so theres no immediate urge to replace it. but if i plan to replace it within the next 6 months i'm not under pressure to go out and buy the first shed i happen accross, i can take my time do my research and find the right car to spend another 4 years in if i cant find what i'm looking for i still have plenty time to keep looking

Just out of interest why hasn't anyone mentioned the Vauxhall Insignia? Seem's natural progression from a Vectra?

Just a quick pick off pistonheads with no real thought behind it - just an example.

no just no. my old man has an insignia as a company car and whilst its a capable car you'd be as well driving a van for the visibility the rear window provides, although i may have to give an estate a try. That and they seem to be holding their money rather well. that and they are priced rather highly for what they are.

looked at a sri 160 last time i was down at vauxhall picking parts up, specced nav, leather and xenons and it came to over 25k ouch thats getting near new 3 series money

A new 320d M Sport with nav, leather and Xenons is nearly £35k.

So no, it's not getting new 3 Series money.

Why don't you just run the vectra until the license expires..? Tbh I think you will be hard pushed to find something as good as being a taxi and as cheap to run and maintain as a vectra especially if you fix it yourself and get the parts trade or less.
If it's doing the job does it not make buisness sense to keep it going or am I missing something.. ?

Seeing as you provide a service to customers, I think you should be thinking of them, rather than yourself.

If I saw a lowered Vectra with tinted windows, I would just walk away. Not a chance I would get in that as a Taxi.

Its the type of thing you would expect to see an illegal immigrant driving in some dodgy part of london, doing illegal "minicabbing"

An Insignia or a Superb, well, both are lovely for sitting in as passengers, very comfortable, look really flashy and newly shaped, and the sort of vehicle you would expect a taxi to be.

The Vectras look so bloody old now, I cant remember I saw the last one I saw which was a taxi.

Lots of Passats and Superbs round here, and it inspires confidence as a customer when you see a nice, well cared for new, spacious car.

Perhaps some taxi drivers have BMWs precisely because of image? After all, if the average punter sees two taxis parked outside an airport, one is a BMW and the other is a Skoda, I guess they'd be more likely to get in the BMW.

Private hire drivers are not allowed to do this - they must be prebooked first or they are breaking the law.

Only Hackney Carriage drivers are allowed to pick up in this way and almost all of these purpose built taxis.

Interesting, I never knew that. A lot of cab drivers where I live are breaking the law then, although that's hardly surprising really :p

How is this the case unless this law is universally ignored?

I flag down taxi's almost every time i am out in Henley (regularly) none of which are traditional looking LTI style taxis...

Edit: understand the difference between hackney carriage and private hire now, there must be a hell of a lot of "normal car" hackneys carriages around as you dont get any purpose built taxis around here really at all. I can see that there could be a benefit to having a nicer taxi, i tend to gravitate towards the Mercs etc when given a choice at a rank, as i know they will all be the same price regardless.
