Need a new PSU 4 my CF 4870's but which one?

Depends what his case setup is like. Having to cable tie a few spare cables up is hardly a big issue. Always somewhere spare in the case to hide them away :D

This is true, did it for many years until today 'i've seen the light' lol.

On a more serious note Toughpower 850W or Corsair TX 750w :)

You'll not get a better PSU for £70 if you're willing to put up with the lack of modular which is hardly a big deal then it's a steal at that price.

Certainly fits the bill but Ive always been told not to buy cheap PSUs, why would I spend £100/120 when I can have this one for £70?

Thats my case so hiding a few cables isnt a problem, will just have to spend 10/15mins doing it.

I'm hoping buying another PSU will solve my problems though. It seems to be getting worse, Ive unplugg 2 hard-drives, 3 Fans, I just played mass effect and my computer re-booted after about 15mins gaming.
A single 4870 was fine so was my 8800GTX with all the overclocks and hardware I'm running now, surely its PSU related?? Didnt relise CD 4870's would suck so much juice!

Maybe not for you or some others but I'm through with that, been modular for years and I ain't going back except when budget leave u no other choice! . . . .I avoid recommending them if I can help it as its just no fun!

Had to use a Corsair VX 450W recently for a build which has less cables than the TX but man I hated having to work with it, seriously! :(

The only downside with Corsair TX750 is that it sounds like an F15 with afterburner lifted !
When listened to music I had to use my Shure in ear headphones to make sure that fan noise was blocked out.
I sold it real quick, PC Power Cooling is the total opposite though. Of course noise is subjective but my old PSU was the deity of quietness, the Seasonic S12 500W which is always used as a noise benchmark whenever I get a new PSU and PCPC is quite close.

This PSU is far from the realms of being a cheap nasty Q-Tec or the like so you can disregard that advice in this instance. It's one of the most highly rated power supplies out there for the money.

Yea..hence why I said "Depends what his case setup is like."

The part you conveniently missed out your quote.

Yeah ok Tom keep ya pants on, I know you just bought this PSU today so Im not saying you made a mistake I am just pointing out to anyone reading this thread that who may be a neatness freak this PSU is a pain in the ***!

You are obviously not a obsessive compulsive neatness freak Tom, and if you can cable tidy that spaghetti away and not have a problem good on you!

just shove it out the way and job done haha! :p

I only use Corsair PSU's now as I found them to be most excellent, however I prefer to pay a bit more for modular.

Surely it should only sound like a F15 when gaming? I have the HX 620 version and while working in windows I cant hear the psu at all, its only when gaming I can hear my psu.

Not noticed the Corsair myself at all but then noise is subjective like you say but I think an F15 afterburner is definitely an exaggeration (I hope!)

That's it. Life is to short to worry about obsessive cable management. I don't see my PC contents as it sits in a workstation so tidying the cables wouldn't do a whole lot for me. Maybe it would improve my temps but not to the point where my PC would become any more stable or anything with a higher OC.

The problem with the TX750 is it's made by CWT (as is the VX550 & HX1000), whereas the others are made by SeaSonic. The CWT ones aren't as efficient and aren't nearly as quiet.

I wouldn't say I worry about cable management, for me its a very enjoyable part of the build that leaves me feeling all warm inside :D

Modular is very helpful in a SFF case but in anything else you're going to be using most of the cables and if you aren't then you probably have plenty of space to spare. Takes a couple of minutes to fasten them out of the way with cables ties, and if you don't bother it makes no difference to temps.

Tom, I'm not exaggerating at all, I left it to run Prime and came back after dinner and while I walked up the stairs I was wondering what the hell was that noise coming from and as you can guess it was from my new TX750!!!:o
Under load the noise was just too much for the ears to bear, like a co-pilot is drilling through your ears with a big Bosch! It was not at all quiet in idle either, the fan was just blowing out air loudly even under no load, I guess this's down to the plastic bit cover up half of the back grill.

Whats your system setup.

This chart shows that the PSU only gets noisy above 500w and even then it's hardly loud

i agree with tom on this. iv done a fair few setups now using the corsair 450w psu and although it has a lot of cables left over its not an issue hiding them at all.

best thing to do is fold up the unused cables and stick them in the drive bay below the dvd drive and cable tie them to the holes in the drive bay. job done. its as simple as that. even with a windowd side panel you would be hard pressed to spot the mess.

and after all, as long as the cables are not impeading air flow its all well and done.

corsair 750w is well worth it to those who prefer performance over looks, and are smart enough to do some cable hiding and saving of a good bit of cash.
