Need a new PSU 4 my CF 4870's but which one?

My HX 620watt psu dont make a noise when priming, only while gaming. Also the fan speed gets faster depending how hot it is. Cos ive noticed it takes a few more secs to slow down when exiting a game if the room temp is real warm, then when the room is nice and cool.

best thing to do is fold up the unused cables and stick them in the drive bay below the dvd drive and cable tie them to the holes in the drive bay. job done. its as simple as that

and after all, as long as the cables are not impeading air flow its all well and done.

corsair 750w is well worth it to those who prefer performance over looks, and are smart enough to do some cable hiding and saving of a good bit of cash.

That's because the fans are thermally controlled, it's not done by load but there tends to be correlation.

All my cables may look in a mess at the bottom, but they all go to where they need to go very tidy and took me ages to get them like that too.

I've found or at least I did with my Modular Hiper 580w that even though my PSU was modular I still ended up using all the cables!

This defeated the object of modular. I have so much kit in my PC that even if I used a modular PSU I'd still end up needing all the cables anyway.

So I just went non modular as you can never have too many cables.

Who makes the tx corsairs ? wasn't there some scare mongering going on about the tx models ? nice to know they are fine though and £70 for 60a single rail is a great bargain.

The problem with the TX750 is it's made by CWT (as is the VX550 & HX1000), whereas the others are made by SeaSonic. The CWT ones aren't as efficient and aren't nearly as quiet.

.

If you read most of the reviews you will see that they are actually as efficient as Corsair state around 80%

As for the noise I can't possibly comment since I've never noticed it yet and it's quieter than my Hiper 580W

Channel Well Tech (also make Toughpower's) or Seasonic make Corsairs, both well respected psu manufacturers.

HX-520, HX-620 – Seasonic
HX-1000 – Channel Well
TX-650 – Seasonic
TX-750 – Channel Well
VX-450 – Seasonic
VX-550 – Channel Well

Load Testing Audio Impressions

In our previous experiences with Corsair their branded power supplies have been some of the quietest we have had the opportunity to review, but today we are looking at a CWT built Corsair as opposed to the two previous Seasonic built units the HX620W and the VX450W. While Seasonic has been known for some time as the “king of silent,” CWT's unit today featured a 140mm fan which in theory means it can move more air at a slower speed which will hopefully mean a quieter unit. As it stands it seems that this mantra held mostly true today with the unit being virtually undetectable in our testing environment. During Test #4 though, the unit did begin to noticeably add a nice low bass sound to the general mix of sounds created during our testing. I will confess I did not actually realize it was the unit making that sound until I turned the load tester off to switch to program Test 4B, but none the less subjectively at full load at 45c the unit does seem to be a bit louder than its predecessors.

Seems the PSU was virtually silent/undetectable until they loaded up up at 100% where they noticed a slight noise from the 140mm

So unless you're loading it up to within an inch of its life. Noise wouldn't be of a concern

How many rails do you think I'll need

Hoping to get a PSU with 4 X 6 PIN PCI-E cables

i'm currently running 2 4850's on a 520w OCZ Powerstream with the rig in my sig which also has 15 120mm fans/4hdd's/pump and it only has about 33amps on a single rail.

that's why i'm surprised you're 600w gamextream doesn't cut it, i've also got the 700w version of yours which is multi rail 4x18a ....i'm pretty sure your 600w model has the same amperage as the 700w.

PC Power Cooling 750W Quad CrossFire = 60A single rail ...hot diggity.

i'm surprised the 600w ocz can't keep up tbh

Looks like they need 420w+, and I guess thats just the cards stand alone, + he has like 6 HDDs, drives, fans and others. Everything overclocked as well.
And the PSU never delivers the full wattage, it's about 80% for top brands, also drops down with time.

So I guess his OCZ can give him max of about 450-480w atm which might be not enough at full load.

And I can recommend Thermaltake ToughPower 750 as well. Will be plenty for what you got.

Hello marscay, you must remember that it's not necessary the overall wattage of a power supply unit but how much that said unit can provide on the +12Volt rail. Now, I believe that the OCZ power supply unit that Loowi_ashley has can only deliver 425 watts off the +12Volt rail which is around the same amount a dual ATI 4870 system will actually need which would explain the problems that he is experiencing.

You will obviously need a new power supply unit to power the system that you currently have. I would personally go for either the Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU which would power your system absolutely fine. However, I believe that specific unit only comes with 2 PCI-E power connectors and you will need 4. Now, you could always email Corsair and I'm sure they will be happy to send the appropriate connectors to you. Have a look here. :)

Hello PhoenixUK, the chart that you have quoted is displaying the power consumption of the entire system and not just the graphics cards itself. :)

snip various images

btx style design where the psu is at the bottom was a slight oversight on my belhalf, i forgot my antec 900 has psu at the bottom too. :p

majority of the other peeps out there should have a spare 5.25inch drive bay clear for sticking in the psu cabes, usually those cases house the psu at the top of the case, in which case the non modular psu's arent really a hassle like in this guys case:

unless he fills up all those drive bays with drives.

That power chart is of the full system at the mains....so that means with around 80% efficiency the system is actually only using about 336W. 210-230 or so of those are probably the 4870s, the rest the mobo/cpu/drives...etc

What case is that?

the one Big.Wayne posted looks like an antec P182 or the mini micro atx version.

the other case with the corsair 450 in it looks like some sort of coolermaster case, possibly an elite 330 from the looks of it.
