need a silent cooler for E2180 (htpc)

i am intending to buy an E2180, i intend to overclock it, however i also need my pc quiet as possible as its in the living room (htpc).

at the moment i have a p4 3.0 northwood running at stock with a zalman 7000 cpu cooler set at lowest and its nice and quiet.

so what cooler can i buy thats really quiet for htpc in my living room and should keep an oc'd E2180 cool enough at lower fan setting, as no doubt the stock cooler will be noisey as hell.
 
thats good to hear and they are not too expensive. how does it sound turned up

can the fan speeds be adjusted from windows using software or do you need to use a fanmate on the outside ?
 
Ah, I see why it isn't loud - it's not even bothered to switch the fan on, idle temps are still 35C on my overclocked E6300!

One second, I'll put some load on it...

No sound difference :) And I'm really particular about sound, everything has to be silent - loudest thing is my hard drive! :/

The version of the Freezer 7 I have is PWM controlled so it changes automatically, I've never noticed it be loud though. If you do decide you want a fan controller take a look at what Sharkoon do, it's very similar to the Zalman Fanmate2 but it's half the price and has a built in fail alarm/LED :)
 
cheers m8y, when you say yours is pwm controlled, is this a different model than the freezer 7 pro that ocuk sell?

would be handy if i could use speedfan but the mobo i intend to ge tis not listed on the speedfan website as able to change fan speeds
 
Thermalright 120 UE with very quiet fan is quietest for the cooling. See SilentPCReview for more details on reccomended coolers for quiet PCs.

If cost is an issue Ninja or Ninjamini or Termalright ultima 90 are all options.

guys thanks for the other suggestions im looking into the different opitons but i would say my budget is £20

i have a zalman 7000 cpu cooler on my p4 but i am assuming its the older version and it wont fit the 775 socket.
 
If you can stretch to around £30 then the ultima:

Paired with a cheap yate loon sl-12 fan would give you a very good solution.

If your resolute about your budget the best solution is probably a cheap thermaltake sonic tower paired with a cheap yate loon sl-12 fan. Beware the sonic tower is very tall - check will all sinks they fit your case, board and other components (remember to take into account upgrades).

A word about Yates though - there is quite a lot of sample varience although even the bad ones are not noisy.

Good suggestion although its £24.66 inc VAT, sare^baw's make sure you check the dimensions but I think the Ultima should fit nicely, can use a 92mm or 120mm fan of your choice although I'm not sure a 120mm fan will fit in your HTPC.

I don't get where everyone is getting this idea that the AC7 Pro is loud - maybe I'm just really lucky?

And the Ultima will be £24.66 + delivery + cost of a 92mm/120mm fan, so that's quite a bit budget increase. :(

Loudness is very 'subjective', what is loud to one person will not be noticed by another.

For all I know you could be half deaf? :p

I'm sure you not but do you understand what I mean?
 
The freezer pro, for ~£12, is a fantastic hsf.
My e2180 is currently running at 3.4ghz, and it's cooled silently by a f7p.

Sure, there are better sinks, but if you could make a graph with price on one side, and effectiveness on the other, I doubt anything would beat it.

Stock cooler is arguably free.
