need a temp graphics card what should get

It depends how far in the future you're looking.

2 x 660s will perform well, but in time it'll mean you have to sell both and upgrade to better single card. If I were you, I'd buy the best single card you can get, and sell the 660 when it comes back from RMA. That way, when you do want more power, you can add a second card in and be set for another few years.

What's your max budget if you sell your existing 660?

I would spend that bit more and get this, 3GB of vRam, 384Bit Bus, 95% the performance of a GTX 770 and R9 280X.

VTX3D Radeon R9 280 3072MB £190

Personally, i'd avoid the VTX3D, i had one for a couple of weeks, and found it to be noisy and hot. That said, it did perform like a 280X, so if you can put up with it, then it's quite the performer (with a mild overclock it hashed at 780khash in LTC too!)
EDIT: i misread the link - my card was the 280X, not a 280.

Not bad but the only problem is dont have the budget till I've sold the 660

That's pretty limiting to be honest - due to Nvidia's strict rules about SLI you'd have to get another 660 if you wanted SLI (you couldn't SLI with a 760 or 770).

So if you want a gpu asap, your choices are:
1. buy another 660 (but it feels counter-intuitive to buy an already out-dated card), plus 2 x 660s in SLI only slightly outperform 1 x R9 280X from benchmarks i've seen.
2. buy a completely different GPU; the best in your budget is a GTX 760 or R9 270X, neither of which seems like a worthwhile upgrade from a GTX 660.

and i guess the third option is to wait for yout 660 back, and settle with that if you're happy, or sell and add your £180 cash and get the best single card you can afford - a 280X or a 290?

i don't think there's much else you can do to be honest mate. what're you thinking?

I dont mind 2nd hand as long as i get the warranty,
what ive done for now is paid £35 and got a gtx 285 till i get my 660 back, in the mean time i can have a look at my options

Well, if that's the case and you want maximum warranty getting a 280x will offer a decent upgrade and should be going for the £140-£150 mark, adding abit more to your budget will get yourself a 290 for under £200.

what are the 270x 280x and 290 like compared to there nvidia alternatives ?
the reason I ask is ive been using nvidia since gtx 260 mostly due to the physx and performance.

Nope lol, having an AMD GPU wouldn't magically unlock hidden performance (they are generally that bad :) lol ) you'll only get extra performance running Mantle (GCN required)

AMD cards currently offer better bang for buck in the second hand market because the mining bubble has burst, that's all. As for comparison between.

290 - 780
280x - 770
280 - 760
270x - 000
270 - 000
...... 660

(pretty sure 660ti is EOL, and Nvidia have nothing to compete with the 270X iirc, happily corrected though)

I was thinking the next step up would be the 760 but Ill need to see what kind of prices I find and warranty ext, Ill also need to see what performance increase I would get compared to my 660

The 760 actually preforms worse than the 670, so would make more sense to go for one of those second hand (obviously you'll have less warranty) the 760 preforms in-between AMD's 280 and 270X and leans closer to the 270X is truth be told :(

Yeah your right, normally I skip a range 260 > 460 > 660 >
I was hoping the 800 would be out this year like they normaly come out every year so it would have been 660 > 860

It went from 2** to 4** ;) :D You never skipped there!! :p
Maxwell is out, but only for the lower end cards, it looks promising providing they can scale it up. I'd say its closer to 18months from generation to generation, though no set timescale. It makes sense to keep the same process open as long as possible to squeeze out as much money as they can.

If you want warranty, then make sure you go with manufacturers that take warranty from the serial number or offer a guest warranty, that doesn't leave very many :)

on that one i didn't I couldn't wait. lol
which manufacturers are there??
the 660 is a msi ive sent it back and ive had no issues so far.
