Really the only way you'll get done as a private seller is if you sell an unroadworthy/dangerous car as roadworthy.

As other have said.

He test drove the car, bought in good faith after inspection, you transferred v5 - that's the end of it. No judge /small claims court would proceed with any kind of case.

A simple FINAL response as above previously mentioned. (the don't respond to anything else)

"it was a private sale, sold as seen - therefore Consumer Rights Act 2015 does not apply and is irrelevant. - I will not respond to any further contact"

Consumer Rights Act 2015
If you’ve bought your used car from a dealership and find a fault with the car within the first 30 days of purchase, take a look at the “short-term right to reject” rule in the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

He's even quoted the bit that tells you that the rules don't apply. He didn't buy it from a dealership.

Just ignore him, the guy must be either incredibly stupid if he doesn't know the difference between a private and a trade sale. Keep a record of everything, if you have any concerns that he send the lads round hand everything you have over to the police in good time and report it as harassment. Given that he

So many reasons for this that spring to mind.
  • Either he just likes to have a new car every few weeks so just finds/causes faults in the hope that he gets either a full refund, or costs for parts paid, whats to say that after this lot of faults get fixed that he wouldn't try the same again next week.
  • He could have just realised that it costs more than it said in the brochure to run.
  • See if it is still on the road after 4 weeks, he might have already wrapped it around a tree!
Keep an eye out to see if you see it come up for sale anywhere, it would be interesting to know if any of these faults are listed or if he is trying to make a few £: Buy it for £16K, get £1000 for "repairs" sell for £18K, essentially giving him £3000 profit and a nice car to drive around in for a few weeks. I wonder how many times he has tried this scam before, and how many times he has had success.

I once sold a DJI Drone on eBay, the guy demanded a refund, naturally eBay initially sided with him and he was refunded, after his torrent of threatening eBay messages, telling me that he wasn't going to return it anyway eBay sided with me. When I looked back at the feedback he left for others it was constant negative comments. Obviously just liked to see what he could get for free.
