OK, so I bought a gaming PC from OCUK very recently, put it together and now I'm trying to play my favourite game, Call of Duty 4. I've been an avid COD4 multiplayer on PS3 since it's day of release, but I decided to take a crack at the PC version because I wanted to migrate to a better system (PS3 to PC).

My problem is:I'm running an ASUS ATI Radeon HD 4890 @950MHz and my max fps is about 160. Is that right? I expected it to be about 200+ with that GPU. Anyway, not my main concern.

Main concern: My ping is super high, like 150. Now i payed extra money for a decent PCI Wireless Network card, a Belkin one to be exact at 300mb/s (something like that), and I was expecting a ping of about 50. Am I just aiming too high?

I only ask because my friend has a worse GPU and Network Adapter than me, and is getting FPS of 200+ and ping of <50. Surely I am missing something. Finally, whenever I play a multiplayer game, 100% of the time I eventually get kicked by Punkbuster? Why? Please help, I love the game and only really bought a PC to game. If it doesn't work it will all be a huge waste of money. Help me out.

Unless something is very wrong - the hardware shouldn't cause a ping that high - either your ISP is congested, something is running on the PC using a lot of download/upload, someone else is using a lot of bandwidth on your connection or your wireless is badly setup.

Framerate wise its hard to measure what you should be getting as it depends on a lot of factors.

With everything maxed out ingame with 4x FSAA at around 1920x res then ~160fps would be what I'd expect from that card... if your running on a lower res config then you should be getting a lot more.

1st things 1st, get punkbuster updated at www.evenbalance.com, select Call of Duty 4, obv, then click where it says "software updates: download" follow the instructions and that should be your PB problems sorted, as for ping, are you running xfire? i have noticed shocking lag/pings since the xfire update so i turn it off when going in game for now.
FPS, what resolution are you playing at and are all settings max?

I'm running at 1680X1050 with everything maxed. Oh well, I'll get over that, but my ping is really annoying me. How do I know if i've set it up badly? There are other people using the internet in my house, but only for minor things like goole and what not, I can't see that effecting my ping that much. So I presume it is badly set up. I mean, my connection strength is 'excellent' according to windows, I just can't see what the problem is.

I'm assuming that if I don't know if I'm running X-fire or not I'm probably not. I mean, I haven't installed it. Just a bog-standard PC, Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit, and COD4, almost nothing else, and nothing else is running while I play.

I'm using a standard router, the one that my ISP gave me =S Is that bad. It's a Netgear router, and I've got Sky Broadband if that makes any difference.

Oh I forgot to say...

Press the windows key + R and type cmd into the box that appears and press enter...

Then type:

tracert www.google.co.uk and paste the results for hop 1, 2 and the last hop here.

OK, I've typed that tarcert thing in, what should I paste here? And how do I paste, it wont let me copy? (Wow I'm stupid =S)

Your not stupid :P the windows console doesn't do copy and paste in the regular fashion... you will have to right click with the mouse and select mark, then draw a box while holding down the left mouse button over the bit you want to copy - then click the right mouse button once its all highlighted to copy that text.

You should see a list of hop and their ping times, etc. we only need to see the results of the first 2 hops and the very last one.

Ah you have a nice low ping to the first hop - which means your PC hardware wise is looking fine - either your ISP is over saturated or something is using bandwidth on your connection.

As your ping times around around 150ms ingame I'd say your COD4 rate settings need adjusting as well - but thats another matter - you need to get the internet connection stabalised first.

I always sort the servers by lowest ping, and then select the lowest, but that always seems to be 90+, which I didn't understand. Would that make much of a difference?
