Need COD4 Help Please

no sky isn't bad at all, ive been with them since christmas eve and not ever had a single problem with them

also it will have nothing to do with you computer

how is you connection status? hopefully you have a "excellent" status, if not then get moving you router inch by inch till you get a excellent status

and make sure your joining servers with a low ping, it will tell you on the search list

also when you go on cod4 online go into console (click the button above tab) and type in: /cl_maxpackets 100

good luck :)

OK, so my ping dropped to an incredible 111. Better, but still not good enough for my liking. Any more suggestions?

Is your wireless connection secure, i.e. passworded, you say there are a couple of laptops also connected but if your connection is not passworded, the guy across the street could be downloading through your connection.

WEP doesn't count as secure.

What you want is at minimum WPA, but if you want minimum ping a cable's what you really need.

Kick everyone else off the net in your house for 5 mins while you try it again, if your ping comes right, connect each other PC 1 at a time, maybe 1 is infected and being used as a gateway?

The cable would be good to try too, if you have one long enough, i would ALWAYS rather be connected by wire for gaming than wireless tbh.

RE some of the posts above - thats why I got him to reproduce this info - his wireless seems to be ok - 1ms pings to his local router... but even the first hop outside his own network is pretty terrible.

Which indicates either the ISP is struggling to cope with the traffic or his internet connection is fairly active.

At this point he would have to use something to monitor bandwidth on his own PC to see if thats causing the lag and then disconnect everyone else and retest.

I definately can't get a wire. The router is miles away, and I've spent enough. I really don't know what the problem is. Please keep thinking about how I could improve it. Nobody else is using it right now and ping still never <100.

You need to use something to monitor the bandwidth on your own PC to make sure its not doing anything on the internet, then make sure the other PCs are completely disconnected to discount any background useage on them.

If your pings as said by topher above still remain in the 80+ range then your ISP is to blame.

If your pings then drop to normal levels then you need to find a guide on setting network rates in COD4 to make sure its properly setup for your connection.

I'm with Sky broadband.

I spent quite some time on the phone to them, but eventually I got through to the right department. I got them to reduce my max delays, and also put me on a fast path connection, removing interleaving. When pining UK servers, it went from 65ms down to less than 10ms! :D

When searching for servers in COD5, the top page of the list usually has servers with ping responses between 20 and 50ms.

I did that speedtest and it says my ping is 151? I presume that means it's definately my internet service provider?

Yes m8, get onto them, that is shocking!

My ping from Doncaster area to the Maidenhead server is around 18.

No it doesn't mean its definatly your provider - until you've discounted local traffic entirely it doesn't mean anything.

My bets atm are either someone has a torrent going or a machine is infected with a virus/trojan thats using a bit of internet traffic.

Or you can try and find other people on the same ISP to see what their latency is like.

Hi have you thought off direct connection to Router via a cable ie rg45 also I would never play online games via wireless, my mate who lives about 4 ,miles away has sky and gets a 60 to 90 ping server various that number " thats using a lan "rg45 cable"".
