looking at the new pictures released and hearing its more a realistic racer and not arcade junk like the last few efforts, it looks and sounds promising so far ..

graphics are one thing, but getting the feeling right is more important so i hope they dont mess the most important aspect up ... they mention the crashes will be unlike any other games...

16player online, career mode, etc etc included ..

****new info***
Electronic Arts has announced that the "all-new authentic racing game" Need for Speed: Shift will be arriving September 22 in North America. Shift will be more along the lines of a simulation, but arcade racing fans can also looking forward to Need for Speed: Nitro, which is under development by EA Montreal.

Shift takes a new, more realistic approach to racing and will be going head-to-head against seasoned pros Gran Turismo and Forza for the attention of serious racing fans.

The environments are also promised to be realistic, with animated crowds, race marshals, and LCD screens helping to re-create the race-day atmosphere.

vehicles in the game will be unlocked from the beginning. What is certain is that Shift will offer some exotic and highly tuned models, including the Porsche 997 GT 2, the Audi RS4, the Lotus Elise 111R, the Shelby Terlingua (a highly modified Ford Mustang made specifically for the Need for Speed series), the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, and the Pagani Zonda F. The game will feature more than 70 different cars in total, including hatches, classics, and exotic imports, and while we didn't get to see all of these, we did manage to get behind the wheel of the RS4 and the Terlingua and found them to look, sound, and feel incredibly authentic and true to life, complete with full race-day liveries

the game will support 16 players in online races. Need for Speed: Shift combines impressive real-world locations and cars, solid simulation gameplay, and some interesting additions to help immerse you in the racing experience. It's currently set for an autumn 2009 release on the PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PSP

Looks good, but I said that about Undercover and that crashed my cousins xbox. Was going to pick up Undercover for £5 the other day, might order it tonight. I'm not getting my hopes up again.

I installed NFS Underground 2 the other day.
On the 2nd day of playing, I remembered why I had stopped playing it and promptly uninstalled it.

Its was not only the fact of having to plaster your car in crap looking **** in order to get a higher visual rating, as well as the horrible camera angle meaning you couldn't see the oncoming car as it was slightly further down the hill than you, meaning you ran straight into it and lost the race. :(

I really want to get back into my car racing games, I had a fair bit of fun on them, but NFSU2 is not the one!

When I want to race racing cars, I play GRID.

When I want to race road cars, on the road, I used to play NFS until they completely monged it.

This game fails.

Screw race cars i just wana drive real life cars in a game (no licence plus cant afford one haha).

Got gran turismo 4 on ps2 but the gfx have aged badly imo and my momo wheel doesnt work with it :(

I have always liked the NFS series. They have been great up to Carbon. Didn't get Pro Street because of reviews. Thought I would try Undercover and promptly uninstalled it after about an hour.

Shift looks good but not really true to the NFS series. Will have to wait and see.

This looks promising compared to Epic failures Carbon and ProStreet, Undercover wasn't exactly what I was expecting when everyone talked about it being the next most wanted. Hopefully getting away from the old ways and revamping it will do it some good. Looks amazing but as said by Klo I hope it isnt also trying to be the next GRID.

Does the nfs u2 dev team still work on ea car games or are they always new or crap teams?

Also yeah EA are rubbish, tho they do have the odd oddball game that ppl actually like tho few and far between. I just hope they get something right for a change and i hope to god they actually support games more soon i.e patch more if it is broke and have new content in patches like some companies do.

Instead of tying all the different types of racing games possible (and crapping up most of them) why dont they just redo NFS2 SE with GRID graphics, added cars, tracks and easy to use internet play

Ooops, someone put an f in shift!

It looks to have potential, but with the tight developing schedule they have set themselves (Typical modern EA) we are going to see another buggy rehash of the same tweaked game engine they have been using for years, which is an appalling abuse of the franchise because the engine is naff on any PC. I wish someone would invest the time into a GT like racing game for the PC.

EDIT: I'd like to be proven wrong, maybe these have been in development before the last shambles of a release and these will be a passable time waster.
