looking at the new pictures released and hearing its more a realistic racer and not arcade junk like the last few efforts, it looks and sounds promising so far ..

graphics are one thing, but getting the feeling right is more important so i hope they dont mess the most important aspect up ... they mention the crashes will be unlike any other games...

16player online, career mode, etc etc included ..

****new info***
Electronic Arts has announced that the "all-new authentic racing game" Need for Speed: Shift will be arriving September 22 in North America. Shift will be more along the lines of a simulation, but arcade racing fans can also looking forward to Need for Speed: Nitro, which is under development by EA Montreal.

Shift takes a new, more realistic approach to racing and will be going head-to-head against seasoned pros Gran Turismo and Forza for the attention of serious racing fans.

The environments are also promised to be realistic, with animated crowds, race marshals, and LCD screens helping to re-create the race-day atmosphere.

vehicles in the game will be unlocked from the beginning. What is certain is that Shift will offer some exotic and highly tuned models, including the Porsche 997 GT 2, the Audi RS4, the Lotus Elise 111R, the Shelby Terlingua (a highly modified Ford Mustang made specifically for the Need for Speed series), the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, and the Pagani Zonda F. The game will feature more than 70 different cars in total, including hatches, classics, and exotic imports, and while we didn't get to see all of these, we did manage to get behind the wheel of the RS4 and the Terlingua and found them to look, sound, and feel incredibly authentic and true to life, complete with full race-day liveries

the game will support 16 players in online races. Need for Speed: Shift combines impressive real-world locations and cars, solid simulation gameplay, and some interesting additions to help immerse you in the racing experience. It's currently set for an autumn 2009 release on the PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PSP

i thought GRID was superb, it was a pure arcade adrenaline type rush with amazing graphics... i agree it was nothing else but for what it was it was brilliant, to expect it to have sim type handling or racing would be naive ..

rFactor and GTr games are fantastic and i can spend allday shaving off seconds or tenths around the same track, however there are people out there who want a different experience...

NFS Shift' from the interviews looks like its going to be a GRID with the approach of say Sony GT games which is something the PC market is in need of, we already have an abundance of realstic games out there....

this game might be good , might be bad but until weve sampled it we wont know, so what if its EA

EA never learn do they. ProStreet tried the sim route and gamers hated it. NFS has never been about 'sim' racing, it is about arcade style street racing. NFS Underground, Most Wanted and Carbon are what NFS gamers want. All of Simbin's games send me to sleep with their boring racing and boring tracks. To those of you who like those games, more power to you - each to their own. But NFS is meant to be about something else.

I don't care if the graphics in this game are indistinguishable from real life, it is going to suck hard.

ProStreet was an arcade game, a very bad one at that.

Simbim games may send you to sleep, but they are extremely successful with a massive MOD community and a great driving experience. They take time to learn and adjust to but then i would have thought the 'Sim' in the title would have given you a clue as to their difficulty ?

Shift, has been developed from the ground up with a different engine and team therefore has none of the restrictions previous versions suffered from. It seems they have put tons of effort into making it as realistic as they can but also catering for casual arcade players, so i fail to see how this upsets you so much?

We wont know until playing it whether its going to be anygood..try not to let things get to you in the meantime

I already know it won't be any good because it is a Simbin game and therefore won't be an NFS game in any remote sense, apart from the name.

It would be like if EA took over Simbin and slapped their name on a street racing game - it probably wouldn't be your cup of tea either eh?

you dont know anything about how good the game will be,

hypothetical scenario's are not worth wasting time on if they have no basis on the current discussion, you only bring that to the table as you have no basis for dismissing a product without factual information or hands on actual testing,,,

we understand you want this game to fail and your not happy it is in the NFS franchise, fine lets move along now ..

Sometimes looking at some posts I feel like pc gamers deserve the treatment they get from developers. You should be happy that a good racing gaming is coming out and especially we(pc gamers) should be grateful.

there will always be 'for and against' no matter how good or bad some software is, maybe its just human nature to go against something that personally isnt what they want.

i also think PC gamers set the bar a lot higher with their software than console players, and having had many games fail to deliver after extensive advertising and false claims i suppose fuels over-reaction sometimes.

however making assumptions about a game without testing it or trying it can make them seem foolish,...

well basically the reason why we/i'm being negative about it, is because the developers were saying it was a propper driving game - competition to forze, gran turismo and the like, or like grid, but from what ive seen it wont offer any where near that realism

thats fine as the video of the bloke testing one car on one circuit might not be indicitave of the whole game.

the different modes ie arcade and sim may be worlds apart in terms of gameplay which is why im not making any rash assumptions until ive seen them and tried them.

I'm making the assumption that it is a sim type game on closed circuits rather than an open world street racing game with cop chases... is that a foolish assumption? I don't think so.

no you have made assumptions the game will fail and its boring purely because they havent made this game to your personal specifications.

the title of the game is 'Need for Speed Shift' and nowhere has it been marketed as a cop chase or open world racer, with all the previews and footage its clear the game has taken a different route.

no matter how many times you state your complaints the game isnt going to change, all im saying is wait until its released, read some reviews or heaven forbid actually try it before deciding its fate !!

does that seem fair ?

whilst screenshots can be 'buffed' a bit they certainly do look sexy!

Following a rather surprising few days with no news on Need for Speed Shift, the ball gets rolling again as EA has released three new previews. The new shots show the BMW M3 GT2 as well as two unseen cars, the Renault Megane as well as the interior of the VW Golf.
Developed by Slightly Mad Studios (former Blimey! Games) and distributed by EA, Need for Speed Shift is expected to be released in September 2009 for the PC and all major consoles. A demo of Shift has been announced to be available this summer.

another good video, have to say if nothing more it looks quite realistic and close to the screenshots they release.

sept 17th its released in europe, sweet... gief demo !!

completely off topic but related to NFS....

Criterion Games, best known for developing the Burnout franchise of racing titles, is now taking a crack at the venerable Need for Speed series. "We don't have a plan right now for a separate major launch on Burnout, because the team doing it is working on a revolutionary take on Need for Speed," said EA CEO John Riccitiello to Kotaku.
Nervous Burnout fans should take note that while it may be a long wait for another Burnout title, the franchise is apparently not being melded with Need for Speed.
When asked whether the "revolutionary" take was some kind of combination of the two racers, Riccitiello replied: "I don't think you can fold Burnout into Need for Speed, because a lot of people like Burnout."
No other details on the title have been released.
interesting, loved Burnout Paradise and loved the old NFS so merging both together could be interesting, how it would work hmm ?

whats interesting is although its in time attack mode, if you watch the top of the screen the player is being rewarded points for 'Racing Line' and 'Mastering Corners' with a multiplier effect ...

the person driving was obviously new to the game and drove pretty poorly, but from the footage it defo looks like they have got the weight and handling right.

@ Guest2 : i think the release date is sept 19th (ish)

No it doesn't. It looks nowhere near realistic as far as handling and weight goes.

The 'he was driving crap and using a pad' argument does not wash, console 'sims' manage a fairly close approximation of a sim even when using a pad, you don't see the cars twitching and jumping all over the place like that in the Forza or GT series, even when you are driving like a 'tard.

I'll reserve final judgement untill release, but as of now I have abandoned any hope that is is going to be anything other than a pure arcade racer. That's not necceserilly a bad thing, but it's not what the game was/is being pitched as by EA.

Having said that, I'm still looking forward to it, there's nowt wrong with a decent arcadey racer ala GRID.

i didnt say it looked realistic i said it looked 'like they have got the weight and handling right' ... we wont know about realism until we have played it.

regarding the controls the experience of realsim is far superior if your using a G25+stick+pedals than a control pad, we all know console controllers work with arcade type sims but you cant compare tbf...

im also really looking forward to this game, it seems to have a lot to live upto for some reason though

But surely 'right' should mean realistic in a game that is touting itself as a simulator

It doesn't look like they have got the weight and handling right. Infact it looks like the complete opposite as far as weight is concerned.

nope wrong again, your trying to interpret my comments to fit your arguement when quite clearly i dont state anywhere its realistic  , i dont recall the Devs stating this was to be released as a full on car simulator,

My God, I feel like I'm banging my head against a brick wall
getting irate because others dont concur with your opinion isnt healthy mate all that banging your head wont help !! ;)

joking aside and concentrating on the game its not too long until we get to test it out and form a sensible and more accurate judgement/appraisel of its feel ..

I'm not trying to make your comments fit anything, it's a natural assumption to assume that somebody is talking about realism when they say 'the handling and weight looks right' in a game that is being touted as a sim. So what exactly did you mean by 'right'?

And EA have touted Shift as a simulator since it was first mentioned. How you have missed that is beyond me :/

firstly im not singling you out nor is it my intention to derail things, ill try to explain my opinion more; when i said the handling and weight look right, i felt taking into consideration how bad the driver was, that the cars movement looked as i expect it too from an arcade point of view.

he/she was doing a time attack session in what to me looked like an arcade mode, now i dont know what setting it was actually being played, but it looked great fun and therefore looked 'right'.

i'd really like to see someone put the game in its highest realsim mode, slap on a G25 and take it for a proper spin . I'm lucky enough to own a G25 and use it for every racing game i can be it GRiD or rFactor. Afterall, racing cars use a steering wheel so naturally this controller will benefit the game more so than a console pad.

when i see people say it doesnt look good or the handling is terrible or that its not realsitic thats fine, but whats the point of making such assumptions before having hands on testing ? i may be wrong and its all garnish over content but im quite enthusiastic from what i keep seeing ...

if the final game fails in delivering realism but has a great arcade mode i'll be happy, but if they can deliver a sort of sim then ill be more happy, i just hope it feels right ;)
