IMO Shift is, as the dev's promised, a game/sim hybrid. There are moments when I want to beat the devs over the head with a very heavy console, but there also moments when I want to buy them a drink.
I think it's safe to say that both the positive and the negative comments about this title are true. But if you can get used to the game elements (and make sure you rename the movie and music folders to save time and earache) there is a pretty immersive experience in here trying to get out.
I was worried this would be yet another waste of cash, and I do worry that a demo might not have enough elements to impress. But for anyone towards the sim end of the spectrum, especially those who like a good bit of <oeer_missus>Ring action</ooer_missus> I think this is definitely worth having.
My only serious complaint at the moment is the steering. There are times (under the bridge at the end of a lap of The Ring) when the FFB weight transfer and overall 'feel' gives you goosebumps, as in sims like iRacing or the
WRS demo. But at lower speeds I struggle to feel really connected with the steering (I use a G25; I've never used a console or a gamepad for anything, so can;t comment on that end of the spectrum). That's usually a make or break experience for me when trying a new title, but here it's not a dealbreaker, and there's still enough overall immersive potential to here to make it a recommended buy IMO. I even love the blurring now, which I was pretty worried about as a gimmick beofre I saw it in action.
Hopefully after a while the tweakers will have exhausted the options and found some settings which hit the control sweet spot. But even if they don't, I've had a very enjoyable morning, mainly spent in single lap Quick Races at The Ring, where you can earn a lot of upgrade cash pretty quickly... assuming you know the track well, obviously.
