Need FPS tips!

what FPS we talking about here, if its UT3 for example, its harsh cause everybody bunnyhops  they just hop about like a bunch of retards, but then thats the story of most FPS online, only advice is just keep playing, its like anything else if you keep doing it you get better at it :)

Currently playing (well, I say that!) Crysis Wars, but I'm also absolute carp at TF2, CSS, COD4. In fact the only thing I'm reasonable at is Red Orchestra as it's a little more tactical!

I'm absolutely terrible at online FPS games; I just die continuously!!! Anyone got any tips?

A tip I have for ya is think about where people would be coming out off so your ready to fill em full of lead :D

Also, if its a one on one situation (ala CSS) then think - if I was this guy, where would I be coming from? Pre empt your opponents move basically :)

Yea, I try to pre-empt people, but don't know many of the levels well enough at the moment! I guess that just comes with time...

aim for the head

real military officer would have you done for saying that, aim for the largest target which is the midsection, don't waste time going for constant headshots :) filling someones torso with rounds for me has proved much more effective than aiming for head

Guess it depends on the situation-if you have a chance to snipe and pick somebody off there isn't anything to stop you headshotting...

yeah course, if you have a sniper rifle and have time to aim for they're head go for it, unless your holding a barrett or something, in that case doesn't really make a difference if you hit head or torso, they're dead either way.

An FPS game is not real life. In games it is almost always best to air for the head, or just slightly below it so the recoil of your first shot puts you level with the head if it misses giving you a second chance. At least that is what I have found anyway. Either way, the key is not to spray but to use short, controlled bursts, just as you would in real life actually :)

adjust your mouse sensitivity so you can track targets well
turn off mouse acceleration in windows and ingame if there is an option
may also want to modify usb pooling rate or if you mouse allows dpi

if there are option in the game turn off blood splatter / screen shake if you get hit

keep the crosiar at neck / head level

straffe and use unpredictable movement especially in fight

practice, practice,
play one game until mastered.
make sure you have decent ping
reasonable fps while playing.
watch others who are decent in spec.
find the best gun for you and use it over and over until you can shoot blind folded at a target.
turn your sound up full !
reasonable mouse makes a difference.

Different games have different approaches. I find:

COD4 takes a lot more watching. Just looking for movement and shooting at it.
TF2 takes a lot more being bold, and adjusting your role to complement your team.
CSS takes a lot more map learning. Working out the usual obvious hiding places and just assume someone is there when you near them. There usually is.

That's my opinion, but might help to show how the games are different.

Number one tip - learn to circle-strafe

That means you should be able to move and sidestep, while aiming at a consistent point. Start by finding a quet spot in your game of choice, and practice stepping left and right, keeping your crosshair in one place. Gradually add-in more complex movement.

Other than that, and a few other basics (like aiming rockets at people's feet, not moving in too obvious a fashion etc) it's down to practice, reaction times, and game-specific tactics.

as most people will do, jump around like a lunatic firing when someone is in front of you. making sure your forever jumping and spinning around.
Its a lame way to fight but sadly its what the majority do.

Aim for the head (usually does a lot more damage)

Don't stand still shooting, get used to moving and straifing all the time. You don't really have to jump around like a crazy fool, just keep moving.

Learn when to run away. There are lots of situations where running will be more beneficial than standing there and dying.

Learn the maps.

Learn the weapons.

Practice aiming and quick switiching weapons, use the best weapon for the job.

Reload at every out-of-combat opportunity.

Practice as much as you can. SOme people have been playing the same game for years, so you've a lot of catching up to do.
