Need a bit help regarding an issue at my partners work.

Basics

My partner took some money out her bank to pay for our holiday the next day.

It went missing from her locker

Due to an argument a few days earlier about money she didn't report it until the next day
(Her day off)

Fast forward 3 wks she got a letter yesterday inviting her to an investigation today at 1500 due to her conduct regarding an alleged theft. Stating she didnt report it quick enough to allow them to carry out an proper Investigation and inconsistency with her version of events ( this being when she phoned to report what had happened she didnt mention £200 of the missing no ey she had taken out her purse not the bank) but she was o Lt asked for a brief explanation on The phone . She was more accurate when they had a meeting

Were a bit stumped why they are investigating the victim. She's not asked for compensation, reimbursement or anything like that she hasn't made any accusations or slagged the company off anywhere.

Any advice is appreciated

They may have had numerous reports unbeknown to you / her. They may also suspect her of trying to set someone up. There may be an ongoing investigation that she's not aware of. It is very suspicious that money went missing and she only reported it the next day though tbh. If someone took £200 out of my locker (I think that's what you're saying, your post is a bit crap) I'd be all over that like a rash, not going home, chilling till the next day and then reporting it. Argument or no argument.

Why would you wait until the next day? If someone had stolen £200 of mine I'd be on the phone to the police and sod company policy. I'd want someone arrested for the theft not ticked off by HR.

So ring them up and tell them you two had a big argument. I'm sure they'll understand and let it go. BFFs and all that.

Or they won't give a toss because that's not their problem and of no consequence to them, whereas someone reporting stolen money a day after the fact with an inconsistent story could have adverse effects on their business.

EDIT: Whilst I may be a bit harsh, things like this irritate me no end so excuse me. For a better answer, try this:

Go through the investigation and see what happens. This is probably just routine for them so let them crack on and only worry when you have more information. And learn to seperate the difference between personal problems and work problems.

She might just be interviewed as part of the investigation surrounding the theft/loss of the money.

Don't jump to conclusions until she has had the meeting.

How would this have can adverse effect on the business?

How would you, as a manager, like word of theft and a thief going around your staff? Do you think your staff would enjoy working in a company knowing they can't trust their colleagues? Or that someone might be trying to set them up?

Basically she has nothing to gain from being dishonest

Doesn't matter. I don't think I can break it down any more so all I'll say is good luck.

Oh come on, you can't possibly be that thick. Here's the part relevant to you, again:

Go through the investigation and see what happens. This is probably just routine for them so let them crack on and only worry when you have more information.

Don't think I can make it any clearer than that tbh.

Like others have said, if someone stole some money from me, I wouldn't leave work until some sort of resolution is met. Leaving it until the day after is crazy to me, unless your wife simply didn't notice, which is possible.
