Hey Guys,

As the title suggests I currently have an AMD setup, which I am going to change when Intel reduce the price on there quad core processors. I am looking at getting the entry level Q6600 as it seems it will be an acceptable price.

I therefore need some help in deciding on what motherboard to purchase, I currently have an Asus Deluxe, but have no real preference, as long is it is stable and reliable.

I currently have OCZ 2gb of ram, do I need to change this?

I am fairly new to PC building, hence some of the noobish questions, apologises for that.

I am also new to overclocking, but would like to overclock the system, or at least have the ability to overclock it, as I gain more understanding.

Thanks in advance.
Lea

Is the CPU socket 939 or AM2?

Download CPU-Z. Would also need to know what speed the RAM is which CPUz will tell you under the memory tag.

What would the PC be used for? and what is your total budget?

Hi and thanks for the reply.

Do not really want to spend over £500.00 if possible. The socket of my mobo is AM2.

Memory values as follows:

Speed XMS2-6400
Latency 5-5-5-12

I am not at home atm so hopefully the above information is what you require.

I use the PC for gaming and have a 8000GTX card.

Thanks again!

The Striker extreme is the best motherboard ( @ 3dmark benchmark anyway ) in the world, so if thats what your after then go for it considering its in budget.

If your after gaming performance I would also ditch the ram as the timings are quite high. Replace it with either THIS for 2gb or THIS for 4gb. Remembering that you need a 64bit OS to use all 4gb of it, otherwise only 3.5gb is used.

If you want a cheaper alternative to the mobo I would go for the P35 DS4.

Final note: If you are goign to be overclocking you will need an aftermarket cpu cooler, such as the this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-027-TR . Not 100% certain that it will fit on the mobo but I think it will

Sorry to butt in to this thread, but when are the cpu prices set to drop? I am in the process of speccing a machine for myself and would rather wait as long as it won't be too long.

I didn't think that the 680i chipsets supported the penryn's, something to do with the voltage supply to the processor? Although there was talk that maybe a bios update could enable it, but I could be wrong. Would appreciate it if someone could clarify this.

Thx :)

Thanks so much for the heads up, as always much appreciated.

I will be purchasing these items in a few weeks, if that is when the prices drop on OCUK :D

Check in processor forum, for the price drop date, tis around July 22nd..
