Of course the decision is up to me, but I need some friendly advice! I have 3 unconditional offers for Civil Engineering that I am considering and your opinions are more than welcome!

1. Sheffield University - Cheap to live city that I like a lot, good reputation, feels like a comfortable place to be.

2. Bristol - The city seemed ok, a bit too busy maybe, really liked the people there (tutors and students), and they say I can take a year studying abroad in USA/Australia which sounds interesting. Reputation better than Sheffield I think?

3. Imperial - I live near London (it is a lot closer than the other 2 unis) and like the place the most out of the 3. The cost is small concern , I won't be able to enjoy all of the city life. It's the best in the UK for the course too and has a terrific reputation that should help give me a boost in the job market. But I'm not sure if I would get the whole uni experience going there? And I believe it is full of overworking geeky men...

Thanks for any help given.

I'd say Bristol - fantastic city, excellent university. Quite expensive though - not incomparable to London, although saying that the halls at Imperial are about £120 a week IIRC.

Bristol for a more balance Student life. But Imperial will give you more advantages for work when you finish. The uni will have more links in london than the other 2.

My brother goes to imperial and a few of my mates live / go to uni in Sheffield

Imperial is a great uni but full of blokes and being right in the middle of the city has its disadvantages, but also its advantages. Also london isnt as expensive as people think, there is so much competition that on nights out that its suprisingly cheap, rent is the killer though.

Sheffield is also a great city, nice place, big enough, great night life and cheap, all the people I know who go there love it, I say go there!

Yeah I knew a few at Imperial, expect a ratio B/G of no less than 10to1 :P
and yes, the rent is an aboslute killer, if you want to live close to Imperial expect to pay about £100-£120, and thats room sharing too.
per week btw!

Of the three, I'd suggest Bristol or ICL. I'd pick Bristol if you're keen on a more collegiate lifestyle. Imperial is great, but people have already pointed out the bad parts. One thing that hasn't been mentioned: if you aren't looking to persue a career in engineering, I'd guess that ICL would offer the most marketable degree (I'm of the opinion that mercenary concerns should be towards the bottom of the list though).

Between bristol and imperial, for me, would be a hard choice; it would probably come down to quite how skint I think I'd be at imperial. There's no point going somewhere where you haven't a clue how you're going to afford it. If you think you can afford imperial, including nights out, then go; if you can't then don't.

You would be stupid not to go to Imperial. Worst case scenario is to do 1 year at Imperial and if you really do not get on there move to Sheffield/Bristol.

Given the choice between Imperial and Bristol, I chose Bristol. Didn't particularly fancy living in London and Bristol seemed nice. Also I preferred the course at Bristol even if it isn't quite as well respected as Imperial. Nearly 2 years later and I'm sure I made the right choice. Sure for engineering Imperial has a reputation arguably on par with Oxbridge, but there's no point choosing it just because of that if you'll be happier somewhere else.

What course do you study psyk?

Imperial for Civil Engineering as you said it has a great reputation, an engineering degree form Imperial is something to be very proud of. Other than than Bristol isn't too far behind. :)

Bristol is great, obviously biased though, I'd say that Bristol and Imperial have a better reputation generally than sheffield,

LMAO you would potentially drop Imperial for fear of not having enough cash for nights out? This is Imperial mate, if you have to grin and bear it for 3 years then when you come out you can get a good job guaranteed and afford lots of nights out!!

Yes but the alternative also has a good reputation. 3 years is still quite a long time. It's no good potentially being miserable for 3 years so you can get a slightly better degree at the end of it. Saying that I'm sure you'd enjoy Imperial fine, but Bristol is likely to be a bit more fun.

Go with bristol mate, you'll enjoy the extra cash, the ladies and you'll still come out with a decent job if you work hard enough.
