Need help / Recommendation

Hi

I have been given a project to do on 3D studio max 7 (A big one) and it is far to slow at rendering on my computer its a bit on the slow side and i do not follow the new hardware that comes out so can someone recomend me what i need to upgrade to make it render a lot faster.

My spec is
Pentium D extreme edition 3.2ghz O.C 4.0ghz using 20x cpu multiplier

1GB of ddr 2 ram (sry don t no what type)

2x 6800 ultras 512mb = 1gb in sli

motherboad is Asus P5NSLI nForce 570

Thanks for reply So you think my cpu is the problem and are the Intel Core 2 DUO a lot quicker than the one i have and what one should i get i will not be overclocking.

The overclock on my cpu was not done by me it was done by a m8

...no I'm guessing really, tbh your system already seems balanced to me.
I'm playing with SolidWorks at work and doubling the ram did squat, but the CPU was maxed out...

If your motherboard can take a dual core, then 3D studio will certainly use it.

also i use windows xp x64 does Intel Core 2 DUO work with the os

from a quick google,
a Conroe 6800 should be almost twice (ish) as fast as a Pentium D EE in 3D studio
