Yeah i doubt anyone sits there just looking at the screen going, 'oh look at that tree, looked better on me old ATi card that', and yer team mates when your online gaming saying 'come on what yer doing were getting killed' etc..., and your saying 'hang on im just checking the details on these walls, yes i can see a diff between em on here to' BOOM!!! yer dead. :D

'Quick get out of that jeep, theres a missile heading for yer', 'hang on im just looking at the detail on this....' BOOOM!!!!!. :D :D
 
Going from NVidia to ATI I noticed no real difference at all. To be honest I would disregard arguments about image quality when choosing.
Either of the cards you mention would be fine, although at 1280*1024 the X1800XT is pretty damn good & will save you some money.

Of course, never let image quality be the primary reason to choose a graphics card.

There are much more important pros and cons to consider. :)
