Need help with my build...

No, i'm still at it, lol. I've just had so many interruptions!

First my mate came up, drunk and crying about his girlfriend, then my mum called, then my partner called and asked me to come get her from her friends house as it was late, then my brother came in... now my cat has decided he wants to stand on the motherboard and is trying his best to get past me!

My stress levels are through the roof! I was supposed to enjoy building my own rig!

I'm getting back to it now. I have another question. The cpu cooler doesn't seem to have a lot of clearance between the back plate and the mobo. Some of the pins at the back of the mobo are very close to the coolers backplate. Is that normal?

That`s why I live on my own and tell no one where I live. Makes life so much easier. :D

Here`s a good guide if you are not to sure on fitting the cooler.

Thanks so much! I was looking for something like that for ages, just to check my work against.

I was just really nervous at assembling and fitting the cooler as i've never done it before.

I'm just scared i get it wrong, turn on the system, the chip overheats and destroys itself and the mobo!

So i took a break and went to bed for a few hours. All i had left to do was install the HDD and GPU.

I got up about 20 min ago, opened the moisture bag the HDD was in, and when i pulled it out i noticed a tiny piece of plastic was broken off one corner.
I looked in the bag and found two bits.

I was obviously alarmed at this, so i held the drive to my ear and slowly turned it this way and that, trying to hear if anything was rattling around.
It sounded ok so i installed it and put the windows disc in the dvd drive and started to install the os.

After agreeing to the license terms it scanned for a HDD to install on but couldn't find one.
It is asking me to click load driver and when i do it is asking that i insert the media, floppy, usb drive or disc, containing the drivers for a mass storage device, which i don't have.

I am really worried the HDD is faulty.

What should i do?

EDIT: Missing words.

Have you plugged both the SATA and power cables into the drive? (One L shaped connection and one flat wider one)

Yep. I double checked them during install.

I have the power cable inserted and the data cable inserted into the sata 3 port 0.

EDIT: I noticed in the boot menu only the optical drive was listed...

Do you have another PC you can try it in?

If not try another port or data cable.

Edit: is this the "B" grade drive?

Hmmm. If you're 100% sure you have it connected as it should be (Power from the PSU to the drive and a cable from the drive to the correct port on the board) and you don't have a working rig to check it in then it may well be time to RMA. In order for there to be broken pieces, it must have taken a knock in transit.

I just tried checking the connections then taking out the black 6GB/s cable and swapping it for the normal blue one and inserted it into the 3GB/s port and its still the same.

The white HDD light on the front of the case flashes as if the drive is doing something but it's still asking for a driver to access the HDD...

EDIT: No, the 1TB Toshiba drive.

Hicks: I was hoping i was just being stupid and missing something. I don't see any alternative to returning it.

I was worried when i first opened the box and saw that some of the boxes, like for the GPU, were a bit bashed. I actually posted about it, but i wrote it off at the time

How comfortable are you with looking at your Bios?

I see no mention of the HDD anywhere in bios.

Here's what it says under boot priorities:

Boot Option #1: SATA PS: ATAPI iHAS124 W
UEFI: ATAPI iHAS124 W (HIGHLIGHTED)
DISABLED

Boot Option #2: SATA PS: ATAPI iHAS124 W (HIGHLIGHTED)
UEFI: ATAPI iHAS124 W
DISABLED

Anymore suggestions?

There are more things you can try, as it might not be the drive and rather the board that needs updating etc.
The fact that you have a damaged drive thought would probably push me to getting it replaced anyway just to be on the safe side. (Up to you)

I have to go to work shortly but I'm sure someone else will be along.

I would try going back into the bios and loading the defaults and saving. I think it's F7 in that bios. Also check that AHCI mode is enabled. If that doesn't work then try and clear the cmos by taking the board battery out for a few minutes.
After that then someone with experience with this board will tell you if you might need to update it. I know those GB boards have needed updating in the past for chips, not sure about hdds though :/

Sorry for not being more helpful but I'm trying to book ferry tickets and get ready for work at the same time :P
