Ok im getting myself confused here, did they do a 400 est or a 200 est or did they do both, wheres AGW when you need him :p i dont think any of them had a turbo as std.
Definatly did a 420 Touring as theres one up my road, its a NASP not a turbo.

Am i allowed to suggest a 205 GTi?

Ideally something oldish, with lots of part availability (cheapish) and engine potential (transplants or whatever), obviously something also which is easy to work on.

Oldish - newest ones are over 10 years old
parts availability - yep, owners clubs, scrappies etc
engine potential - Mi16, Turbo 8v..
easy to work on - well, I can work on them, so it must be easy :p

Can pick up a project one for a couple of hundred quid, mine was £250.

You can, and if i could find a non twisted one for not so much money i would buy one, im thinking of getting one and dropping a 306 gti16 lump in it.

I'm right here :p

They did the 200 3 and 5 door hatchbacks and then the 200 Coupe (aka Tomcat).

The 400 was available in the saloon and the estate version, known as the Tourer.

If you want to go Rover, get a 214 or 220 SLi and transplant a turbo engine into it.

They have 5 doors, keep the steelies, add rust, fit a Pulsar T28 turbo... and you'll have yourself a nice little sleeper.

The 220's will be pretty much a direct swap. Same subframes, engine mountings... infact, externally, the NASP and turbo engines are identical.

If you get a 214, you'll need to switch the mounts and subframes along with a few other bits to accomodate the turbo lump.

Mini sounds intriguing, but just about every pre 90 model tends to be a real rust bucket, which isnt much of a problem but it leads me to think that it wont be suitable for lots of power without major fettling.
Common misconception is that the 90 cars are good. They arent. The best Minis are in fact the 60's ones as the metal they used was thicker as it was cheaper.

90s minis are pretty bad for rust. 80s cars were the worst.

Anyway, Minis are stupid money these days, 10 year old cars are still going for £4k+ and you'll be lucky to find anything worth buying for less than a grand.

Fun with a suzuki swift engine or Vtec though :D
