I'm in need of a new headset.

The past 2 headsets I've had have been Speedlink Medusa 5.1 sets (both 3.5mm with amps). I actually thought these were pretty good (sound wise) but they both ended up breaking / snapping where the earphone attaches to the headband. I'm not sure if i want another set but I'll probably try something else.

I used to always use my headset, due to playing wow a lot and being on ventrilo most of the time. I don't play wow anymore, so using my Z-5500s a lot more. These days it will be used at night or when i need to use a mic, so needs to be fairly decent with black ops coming up, will be playing a lot with friends.

Which headset should I get?

I don't have a specific budget, tho definatly under £100 but closer to £50 probably. Brand wise, Logitech stuff has always been fantastic for me but what else is out that.

Also, Stereo vs 5.1

I liked the 5.1 (or 'virtual' 5.1) from my speedlinks. are stereo headsets that much better? is the directional part of the 5.1s utter crap?

Thanks

I found the directional aspect of the Medusas worked for me but there are better options.

Trying Dolby Headphone on a Xonar D2 with stereo headphones utterly blew the Medusas out of the water for me. Strangely - even the Medusas in stereo mode with Dolby Headphone blew away the Medusas in 5.1 mode. Having said that, I've heard £10 stereo headphones that surpass the sound quality of the Medusas.

Xonar DG is the cheapest Dolby Headphone card available at the moment. That plus decent stereo headset should do very well.

Was trying to decide whether its worth going for a new sound card.

If i do, I'll probably spend a decent amount on one. Seeing as i have some decent speakers, seems like the thing to do. Can also carry it over to my next build.

Any stereo headsets you can recommend?

Not at all. Xonar D1/DX is a great card. Offers superior components to the DG, and a few extra features. The DG is a superb card for anyone not wanting to spend upto and around the £50 mark. DG does have a headphone amp, so that may benefit whichever headset, or headphones you decide on. The biggest question is, will there be a noticeable difference in sound quality between the DG and D1/DX. Until there are some good reviews that offer a comparison, we can only guess.

Ok which 3.5mm headset do you suggest? Budget up to about £80 but prefer closer to £50. Going with an asus DX sound card.

Best bet are either goldring DR150 or goldring NS1000. Both are about £50, a cheaper alternative are the DR50 which are about £20 but tbh the dr150 & ns1000 are by far superiour and work better with dolby headphone according to most users here.

I personally have the xonar D1 & DR50's and purchased these on uriels recommendations. I also have used 5.1 medusas and a few others and too find the xonar dolby headphone & stereo headphones much better :)

Didn't you have some turtle beach thing that you preferred at some point?

I also have gainward sound explosion 5.1 headphones which have the 4 speakers in each cup. I prefer these for counterstrike source only because the rear speakers can actually pin point where some one is walking. As you stated before this isnt as fluid as over stereo but give a gaming advantage.

The DR50's are better for music & newer games like MW2 & BC2 etc. I'm still very much torn..... I love the DR50's but cba to keep swapping over as 98% of the time I play CSS :D

the medusas are crap imho, my bro has them. If my gainwards ever broke (over 5 years old now) I would only use the DR50 or prob get NS1000's.

EDIT: - the more i use DH & the dr50's the more I love them :) Lets hope santa brings me some ns1000's...then I'll have a 3 way fight on which i prefer on my hands :) PS. I also use the fiio e5 with the dr50's

I need to have a mic on the headset. What are the creative fatality ones like?

I have a SPEEDLINK SL-8691-SBK Spes Clip-On Microphone, this is VERY good and can be cable tied to the headphone wire which = headset.

I still am at odds with myself as to which headphones i prefer :p
