Need perspective - show me your 50/55" setups (thanks).

I was more just asking for clarity on what you were saying, the previous post was potentially a bit ambiguous as it wasn't clear if you mean to say that amps are improving except for class D amps or that class D amps are the exception and are improving.

Obviously manufacturers do try to continually improve, certainly with regards to efficiency but there isn't really much to be done in terms of improvements to sound that could actually be perceived.

My point is more like some guy has say some separate amps from ABC Amplification etc.. Ltd in order to bi-amp his top of the range speakers from XYZ speaker company used at the front of his setup, he's got some big multi channel power amp for the rears etc.. (whatever.. he's spent some money finding some set up that he likes). He also has an AV pre-amp from ABC Amplification etc...

10 years later Dolby and others have new standards.. his pre-amp is out of date and doesn't support "Dolby Super UHD sound"... he's a bit gutted, his mate Brian has the new standard and the under the floorboard upwards facing speakers are great.... Well he probably only really needs to swap out the pre-amp and add in a couple of speakers. Any new power amp models form ABC Amplification etc.. Ltd, if level matched with the existing ones he has, won't likely make any perceptible difference. The XYZ speaker company's new range might be better, they might also be worse... or them might just be more or less the same thing but in a slightly different box.

Yeah for me to upgrade my non hdmi, non DTS master av pre I just remove my av pre and buy a new one, keeping the channels of amplification.

As power amplfiier sound I did notice difference between two brands . Not as much as pre Alps bit it was there, if you had bad matched combo then change one of the bad match amps it made a difference. Ie harsh amp harsh speakers, change to soft power amp and that fixed it.

Fits in well.

My main bugbear with wall mounting is that it's hard to get the height right. Most end up a bit too high when ideally you want to be looking at somewhere between the middle and 2/3 height line when sat down.

It's a minor thing and more important things usually dictate placement - furniture, the wife etc :p

My TV is probably higher than most people would be happy with, but when sitting upright and not slouching the height is only a few centimetres too high, but as it is slightly angled downwards when sitting naturally on the sofa you head is angled perfectly at the centre of the TV. I personally wouldn't really want it any lower, but then I definitely would never have it any higher.

Apologies guys, for some reason I didn't get alerts - i think my Computer Forum activity usurps other forums.

@hornetstinger - thanks for the comprehensive replies - my intention was to simplify my present AV/5.1 system - as we(i) wanted a simpler setup and soundbars seem to have come on a long way in the past 5 years. I would then add some decent, dedicated music speakers once i've lived with/approved the soundbar. That said - you've kinda rained on my parade (in a good way) and reminded me why i got separates in the first place - so will research some more but the YSP-2700 reviews very well - so hope to get a demonstration in a few weeks. As mentioned - if it's nearly on a par with my old Jamo setup i would favour the soundbar's form factor for films/series.

My music setup is more important - the idea was quality speakers/DAC but again need to research this - wife has to be considered - and as a result subtlety/size is a factor. So, i'm very much concentrating on TV for now and the tv-unit as some are clearly all about the aesthetics than functionality - i want both.

@dowie - thanks for your input - again, points well made and making my possible transition to a soundbar harder. Between you and @hornetstinger i'm understanding how some members feel in the Computer Forums when we discuss component benefits when speccing systems. :)

*Balls - my wife has looked over my shoulder while typing this - and is of the opinion she would prefer just 2 speakers :/ - so looks like we need to discuss this further, as i may be hamstrung from the outset for my preferred choices. Apparently, it depends on the TV/media unit we get - so i may do another thread asking for people to show their units - as some look nice but aren't practical and vice versa (I'm beginning to regret getting rid of the fireplace as a central feature :/)

@pepp77 - thanks for the pic

It reads as though it's at the perfect height :)

If you're really stuck and you're not able to use full fat hi fi gear and speakers then I'd be tempted to try and get her to compromise on a soundbar with sub and rears perhaps?

I mean if forced to get a soundbar I'd perhaps look into this one:

https://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-h...ess-subwoofer-rear-surround-speakers/p4151755

The company it comes from do seem to take research into speaker design more seriously than the vast majority of manufacturers, if I were to take a punt on a soundbar type set up I'd go with them... you can perhaps conceal the sub somehow and the rears can be placed discretely then you've just to the sounbar under the TV.
