I've finally got myself some £££ and im thinking about getting some new speakers but have no idea where to start so im hoping that you lot can help me out :D
I like the look of some of the M-AUDIO Studiophile range (i've seen a few pictures in the "your desk right now thread") but other than that i have no idea.

- I have a budget of around £100 although i can possibly push to £150.
- im after a 2.1 or a 5.1 set up with a decent sub preferably 5.1
- being honest i would rather go second hand because that way i can get
more or less seen as I don't have the biggest of budgets. But if you guys
say i dont need to then fair enough.

If it's of any help i listen to a wide variety of music to bass heavy dub step to death metal and the speakers would also be used for gaming and watching films etc. (general use) so obviously i want speakers that will be up to playing everything in good quality.

I think thats everything.

thanks,

Flare

Don't bother with 5.1 at that budget, i used to have cheap Creative inspires and after getting good 2.0 speakers i'll never go back to anything that cheap. If you like bass especially steer well clear of the budget stuff the bass is just rumble. That rumble that mkes them bad for music is the same thing that makes them good for games and action movies though as even though there's no detail the bass certainly has power which is great for making gun shots and explosions sound great.

Personally i'ld go with headphones at that budget. Audio Technica's range have a good range which are well known for their sound stage.

Though if you must have speakers go with Acoustic Energy Aegos or if possible Klispch Pro Medias, at your budget though you'ld have to get the 2.1 versions with both.

thanks for the reply, ok i'll stay away from 5.1. im not too fused about speakers for gaming because all my gaming is done with my headphones.

I forgot about those acoustic energy speakers, i looked at them about half a year ago! the seemed very decent and with a very good build quality. would you say the Klispch Pro Medias are better?

I would go second hand with that budget. I bought some Mordaunt Short bookshelves and a NAD amp for £70. Incredible value for money they are really colourfull and bassy.

i would prefer to go second hand and get soemthing better, the only thing is i dont really know what to look for

You should be able to get Bose Companion 3 for £150 second hand.

I have the Companion 5 and I have to say they are very good.

As far as I know the only difference between the two is the C5 produce 5.1 surround sound from 2 speakers and the C3 is 2.1

So 3 different 2.1 sets have been named so far, being:
Acoustic Energy Aego M 2.1
Klipsch ProMedia 2.1
Bose Companion 3

So which out of the above would you say is the best for what i need? bearing in mind i do pretty much all my gaming with my headphones

Dont bother with PC speakers at all. With £150 spend £50 on a second hand amp and £100 on some decent floorstanders, you wont need a sub then.

£150 got me some B&W floorstanders and a Marantz amp. Seperates are 1000 times better than PC

edit - isnt this in the wrong part of the forum (this part is for proper audio/video equipment!)

At £150 look on the bay for floorstanders or bookshelf speakers. I had Mission M71 bookshelf and a Cambridge A1 that I sold for £55. That setup was loads better than my megaworks 550 5.1 pc craphouse that was £180

Create another thread with advise for seperates in your price range. You will bet a better response. Mission are good, B&W (but expensive, look for bargains on ebay) Jamo, Quad, Nad, Celestion, Diamond... theres loads

Cheers for the help Guest2 :D

avforums.......thats the one!

Dont suppose you would recommend B&W DM110 speakers or the B&W DM601 S2 speakers?

Not sure about the DM610 or DM110 but the DM601 are supposed to be good. Like a bookshelf version of the DM603

Look around for some 603s, you might be about to find some for around £100 or a bit more. My 603s are great. Just need a DAC instead of my old Audigy2ZS soundcard now and im set. Going to save for a Beresford 7520 i think (or just buy one on credit card next month)

had a quick look at the 603's but im not after floor standing speakers because my desk would get in the way of a lot of the sound. So im looking for bookshelf speakers that i will maybe get stands for or wall mount

Could chop your desk up?!

Mission M71 are good bookshelf for the size, 601s also have some great reviews and feedback

Personally I would go with the Acoustic Energy Aego, but it depends what you really use your PC for, I use mine for general sound and some music, but have my amp and floorstanders across the room if I really want to listen to music (if you know what I mean).

So personally I wouldn't bother with another amp/speakers. I have a cheap set of Logitech 2.1 speakers from Tesco on my PC and they're perfectly acceptable. It also depends on who you live with too. When I lived with other people I had my floorstanders and amp hooked up as my normal PC audio but it was difficult to get any fidelity out of them as I had to keep them pretty quiet, them being so big and powerful.

If you're on your own and don't really have to bother about others AND don't have another audio system in the house I would recommend a second hand AMP (can't fault my Cambridge Audio A5 not sure how much they go for these days though) and some floorstanders, rememebr you can always raise them up above your desk with spikes or something similar.

imo :)
