Need Specced For £600ish

A friend of mine has had an unfortunate incident with his current PC and basically needs to replace all the major stuff; CPU, Mobo, RAM, GPU, and possibly case and PSU (I'd imagine he'll need a new PSU).

Basically he has around £600 to spend, but I'm sure he'd spend a little bit more if it was a little over, or would offer a good increase in performance. He's pretty happy just playing CSS/BF2/Quake 4, and is looking for a spec with a slant towards a better CPU than the GPU.

This is under-budget and assumes that he wants a case as well as a PSU. If he's happy with his case I'd suggest getting a Corsair 520W PSU instead.

Graphics is not DX10 but it doesn't sound like that'll worry him too much.

CPU is nice and seems like it is at the level he is looking for.

Also, oh noes the Ballistix is not in stock, so I've picked the Corsair RAM instead. It seems tight and will be good stuff.

Edit: with any saved money you could bump up the CPU to a faster quad, or get another 2GB RAM if Vista is in his plans.

Nice spec & advice, actually the same spec i put together so put another one together this time with a seperate Case & PSU and the faster Quad.

Didn't realise the OCUK X1950 was that much cheaper; go for that unless you know that it doesn't include an adaptor or something like that that you require. Also both of us have assumed you need a new DVD drive; this might be another £20 saved if you can reuse an older one.

Yea, he doesn't need a new drive or HDD, just told him to take that and add it to a GPU or whatever. Thanks for the help.

Edit: He's liking the idea of an 8800GTS, so basically would he need a larger PSU for that?

Great then, he can certainly afford a 8800 GTS and the Corsair 520W can easily handle it np if you were talking about the Corsair PSU :D

Right, thanks for all the help so far, but he has another question, he has two old IDE HDD and is wondering if there is a way to connect them upto that motherboard.
Buy an IDE controller card (this would be a PCI card with IDE connectors on it) or buy a couple of IDE->SATA adapters.

Edit: not sure exactly which board you're referring to but most new ones still have at least one IDE socket.

Asus p5ne sli has two IDEs so will support 4 drives. Also supports 1333 fsb and has s/p dif. I got this board recently with e6750 and a 8800 gtx superclocked and 4 gb of ram for a little over 500. Add a psu and case for under £600 and its a winner!
