Need to verify age to watch some Youtube videos

Well that felt awkward! I stuck my Visa card details in to YouTube as it wouldn't except my driving licence regardless of what light I took the photo in. :o

I think it was a natural step after they started asking Youtube creators to self mark their own channels as adult only or kid friendly.

I was apprehensive at first because I don't like companies knowing my details. But on the flip side, I support an adult version of the Internet were kids shouldn't be allowed to stumble over 18+ material.

Funny how people are prepared to do this for Youtube - to view, in some cases, just "potentially offensive videos" - but there was uproar when people were going to be asked to do it to view porn.

Meh now my main account randomly gets asked to verify age on videos tagged as age restricted despite it should be already verified and wants either card payment or photo id but if I swap over to my Google account it just asked me for date of birth and no further verification.

age verification is a load of crap even documentaries are getting it..

I'ma assume it's a highly professionally made informative video like their previous video I just watched on mushrooms.

gotta be over 18 to watch someone growing cannabis? seriously? oh oh oh but wait it's fine when it's a video from a big pharma company growing cannabis right..
why don't get they age verification?

I bet I could find news reports showing people smoking crack and heating heroin on a spoon that aren't 18+ and loads of violent news reports.

my google account must be older than 18 years too

Find it hilarious how many ads i've been getting for the new resident evil (y'know, that famously family oriented series that's fun for kids of all ages) whilst also occasionally tripping an age verification for some vids.

Since when did you have to send them your credit card details or send images of a passport, driving licence etc. etc. to Youtube in order to watch a video?
This is because Google are Making Youtube KIds/Youtube & 3rd instance.

Youtube Kids < 12
Youtube - Educational content/suitable viewing - 12-15
Youtube - 15+

I assume they trainning their AI to determine age ranging on certain people.

Who anyone that has a child, restricting to Youtube KIds is pointless for home learning & schools REQUIRE youtube. which i have pushed back on multiple times, & reported to Google.

Seems maybe Google has finally realised Kids need access to more than Peppa Pig.

Personally world just like Youtube Education Edition but if they want to give access to suitable content creators they can try.

What really cheeses me off these days is how Youtube can region lock you out more than the age verification. Sometimes I've watched certain US sports dependant on who it's from it'll say something about restricted from your country.

I always used to chuckle thinking of the DVD player days.

I understand the point you're making. Though the credability of the company plays a part. The one who was asking for verification of porn sites has since been at the centre of a pedo scandal.

On that police video wasnt asked to verify age, but I expect it will come, they likely doing a progressive rollout.

The problem I have with sending ID to verify age is I think it adds risk for ID fraud, the internet needs a different way to verify age.

On the NHS app I was asked to read out numbers whilst showing my face, that would be a way to visually verify age as an example without sending off official documents and just hoping they dont get compromised. People who struggle to look over 18 would still be a problem, but it would be good enough for those of us who are much older than 18.

I also have multiple youtube accounts, so I would hope the age verification links them and works for them both.
