nerds waiting for new iphone

Not at all - you may purchase something and find that the price you paid is not in line with the value you extract or are able to extract from it. However, if a price for something is fundamentally too high (which is what people in this thread are saying), then it won't sell... it is as simple as that. The iPhone does sell, so the price isn't too high. That's not to say that the value is there for you, though.

I see what your saying but I'm still not convinced, I personally believe that many people buy the iphone knowing it is an over priced product but they simply just 'want it', for some they feel they need it, for some it's an important status symbol, for others it's simply an expensive indulgence, Apple marketing does play a big part in this, they are very good at what they do, to say otherwise is to discredit them imo.

Manipulative marketing in their job adverts too :D

Bet you've bought a game at midnight!

I on the other hand have never queued for an iPhone (or any launch product) nor got out of the house at midnight for a game.

:p

The irony here is that we are all on a computer forum about OVERCLOCKING! One might argue those people in the photo is less nerd, more fashion victim.

I bet that everyone here pre orders their games rather than buying them at midnight. Reading the PC games section at least shows me that just about everyone either pre orders, or waits for sales before buying their games. The whole trend around queuing up for hours on end outside a store for latest version of your previous hardware seems to be unique among Apple fans. Most sane individuals would rather simply place an order online and have it delivered, and this is always better because phones and contracts purchased online can be cancelled and returned within 7 days, store purchased ones can't be.

What about a pair of designer jeans that cost £5,000 for a pair? Personally, I'd say they're overpriced, regardless of whether other people are willing to pay that and think they're getting good value for money. I guess you iFans don't agree?

You (and some others in the thread) seem to think that marketing is some kind of trickery or magic which carries no value to the buyer. You're also trying to commodify a phone.

But you don't buy two ounces of phone. You don't buy one and a half tonnes of car.

When you buy a product, you're paying for the product, the marketing, the wraparounds, the integrated and soft services. That's the case for an Apple iPhone. It is also the case for Starbucks, Costa, Nero coffee. Coffee and beans is a few pence. You're mostly paying for the marketing - the lifestyle brand buy-in.

It is also the case for Sony Vaio, Levi Jeans, GAP clothes and A&F tshirts. It's the case for everything.

What matters to you might not matter to someone else. You might buy by the GHz. I might buy by the gram.

If you want to reduce every single thing in this world into its core components and materials, then according to you, everything is overpriced. But that'd be fallacious and not representative of reality..

What is an iFan exactly....I have Dyson fan, but not an iFan.

On the subject of overpriced, I own a couple of iPads and while they may be expensive they are not overpriced for the amount of use and versatility I get out of them. If they were rubbish and sat in the corner doing nowt then they would be overpriced.

An iFan is an abbreviated Apple/iPhone fan, thought I'd seen it before but I could be wrong.

What if you could get the same amount, if not more, use and versatility from a different product at a lower price? Would that not make the iPad comparatively overpriced?

Thought so but not always easy to tell. :p

Fair enough, what does the iPad do that's unique? I thought that Android tablets could do everything the iPad could do.

Android just isn't as slick and easy to use as the iPad...I have a couple of other tablets floating about, including a Touchpad and a Galaxy Tab but neither are as good as the iPad. Things like iBooks simply don't exist on the Android devices and the alternatives are not as good.

Phones however, I find the Galaxy Nexus I use far better than my old iPhone, for much the same reasons.

Fair enough, that's pretty subjective though. I'm sure some people would say Android tablets are more slick and easy to use depending on what they're doing with them, and could therefore say the iPad is overpriced for them.

Clearly, deciding whether or not something is overpriced is down to the individual, but I'd argue that a lot of people buying the iPhone 5 don't have a great deal of knowledge about what else is on the market and so don't think it's comparatively overpriced, but might have a different opinion if they knew how high the quality of the cheaper competitors are. Most people I know IRL who have iPhones really have no idea about Android and haven't even considered using it, they just go straight for the iPhone because they believe that nothing else can come close, and they pay through the nose for it.

I find it quite interesting actually how many people who usually have no interest in technology or "geeky" stuff simply MUST HAVE the latest iPhone. They don't care about having a Smart TV or any other cutting edge tech, but when it comes to smart phones they all want to have 'the best of the best' (in their view). Somehow, paying really large sums of money to have top-end technology isn't seen as geeky when it comes to Apple products. Really clever marketing is to thank imo.

Value is entirely subjective when it comes to most consumer products...there are the exceptions regarding those items with intrinsic value such as Luxury Watches, Jewellery and so on, but as far as electronic goods are concerned the individual decides the value of something and whether it is worth the cost to them. For me an iPad is worth the cost, an iPhone isn't.

An let us not underestimate the value of "cool".

I did buy an I pod mini once because they looked shiney any everyone else had one. After a week of playing with it, it ended up sat in my drawer and was never touched again. More than twice the size of my mobile phone at the time which also played MP3s and had a memory card slot. Yes I had too many friends that studied stuff like media and TV courses and at 18 years old I wanted to be cool like them. Then I got wiser with experience and realized that cool = Richard Head :p
