nerds waiting for new iphone

Basic computer skills is know how to type a letter, go online and send an email, not how to make one from scratch.

Putting a few PC components together is not 'making a computer from scratch'.

Have we really sunk that low in this country?

What next - people called nerds because they can put an Ikea coffee table together?

Putting Lego or coffee table together require nothing more than follow instructions.

There is no manual on how to put together parts from various manufacturer, more still, no manual to troubleshoot.

Before you buy your coffee table you do nothing more an look at it, measures it and imagine it in your room.

With computer parts, say a graphic card, before you even decide on one you want you first need to make sure it is compatible, make sure your have enough power from the PSU, do you have the cable from he PSU? Have they change the socket, did you get the graphic card with the right socket? When you roughly know what you want, you then read up the different variant from different people who rebrand the card, reclock the card, bundle with different software or games, choose the amount of ram of that card.

Then no doubt the endless reviews, speed tests and what not you can read online.

Then there is little things like knowing you need to de-static yourself, knowing the outside of the anti static bag is lethal to the card.

When it comes to install you can either remove the old driver, run some specialist deep clean software and install the new card, or do a format which is recommended. Before that you need.to back up all your emails, bookmarks, setting, make sure you haven't forgotten any software or documents and back them up.

Then if you run into problems, you can do lots of tests, troubleshoot, run it with different AA levels for games.

Yes, building a computer is like putting together Lego and coffee table.

Just like that.

It's like there is a difference from know how to drive and knowing how to put a car together.

No, I'm talking about reading comprehension. Seeing a motherboard that says it supports socket 1155 and then finding a socket 1155 CPU hardly constitutes being a nerd, does it?

Oh, and I'm not suggesting they go into it blind. They can seek help from Youtube or this forum.

You forget all the other knowledge one needs to know that go with it. Did you pick that one because it has 4 bay of ram slots, or 2? Do it make a difference? Do you plan on upgrade the ram? Do you know how many gig each slot can support? Is the layout of the mobo constrictive because of that graphic card you want has a massive heatsink and it might not be a good idea to have that wth this? Does this mobo fit in this case you got?

It's not just matching sockets.

Read my post above on install a graphic card.

See's thread on 'nerds waiting for new iphone', then spots thread about drawing a picture of your favourite game in paint....

While it could pose an issue, a simple Google search will likely give you an answer. If not, a quick question on these forums will definately give them an answer.

Simple arithmetic will suffice. A motherboard has four slots and houses a max of 32GB. 32/4 = 8GB in each slot.

Is the layout of the mobo constrictive because of that graphic card you want has a massive heatsink and it might not be a good idea to have that wth this?

Unless you're installing TV tuners, Raid cards or network cards (None of which most first time builders will) this should never be an issue.

Does this mobo fit in this case you got?

Both the case and motherboard pages specify what form factor it is. Just like the CPU socket example, you can probably guess that an ATX case can house an ATX form factor board

It's not just matching sockets.

Read my post above on install a graphic card.

^^^ And you know all the above, without research, i mean, all common knowledge and you were born with it right?

like, all the motherboard in the world can support 8G of ram in each slots do they? What if I buy one next year? or in 5 years' time. Do you not think they get bigger? And how do you know that? they tell you on BBC news at 10?

Or do you read up on that on a computer forum/website/review/magazine and keep up to date with latest technical developments.

You make a million decision when buying a motherboard, using knowledge that you have acquired about computers, it's a lot more than just matching sockets.

p.s. as for form factor and matching it is all you need to do..lol sorry Skully !

I am sure taking a hacksaw to it isn't in the instruction manual.

He also had to splice a socket from the PSU if i recall because it didn't fit.

may I add that PC building is more geeky then nerdy
and ifanboys are more dorky then nerdy

Anyone queuing up for a phone is a bit of a div anyway considering you could have one delivered to your doorstep on the day of release by preorder.

And it's only a phone, one that is almost the same as the one in most of these chaps pockets.....madness.
