Basic computer skills is know how to type a letter, go online and send an email, not how to make one from scratch.
Putting a few PC components together is not 'making a computer from scratch'.
Have we really sunk that low in this country?
You are going to define "scratch" by turning sand into silicon are you?
Basic computer skills is know how to type a letter, go online and send an email, not how to make one from scratch.
It's like there is a difference from know how to drive and knowing how to put a car together.
No, I'm talking about reading comprehension. Seeing a motherboard that says it supports socket 1155 and then finding a socket 1155 CPU hardly constitutes being a nerd, does it?
You forget all the other knowledge one needs to know that go with it.
Did you pick that one because it has 4 bay of ram slots, or 2?
Do it make a difference? Do you plan on upgrade the ram?
While it could pose an issue, a simple Google search will likely give you an answer. If not, a quick question on these forums will definately give them an answer.
Do you know how many gig each slot can support?
Simple arithmetic will suffice. A motherboard has four slots and houses a max of 32GB. 32/4 = 8GB in each slot.
Is the layout of the mobo constrictive because of that graphic card you want has a massive heatsink and it might not be a good idea to have that wth this?
Unless you're installing TV tuners, Raid cards or network cards (None of which most first time builders will) this should never be an issue.
Does this mobo fit in this case you got?
Both the case and motherboard pages specify what form factor it is. Just like the CPU socket example, you can probably guess that an ATX case can house an ATX form factor board
It's not just matching sockets.
Read my post above on install a graphic card.
^^^ And you know all the above, without research, i mean, all common knowledge and you were born with it right?
like, all the motherboard in the world can support 8G of ram in each slots do they? What if I buy one next year? or in 5 years' time. Do you not think they get bigger? And how do you know that? they tell you on BBC news at 10?
Or do you read up on that on a computer forum/website/review/magazine and keep up to date with latest technical developments.
You make a million decision when buying a motherboard, using knowledge that you have acquired about computers, it's a lot more than just matching sockets.
p.s. as for form factor and matching it is all you need to do..lol sorry Skully !

I am sure taking a hacksaw to it isn't in the instruction manual.
He also had to splice a socket from the PSU if i recall because it didn't fit.
I can google every step of building an engine, but that don't make me a mechanic.

yeah but a mechanic isn't a minimum wage job.
