Net curtains...Why?

One of my friends just bought something that does the same job as net curtains, but they look a lot nicer.

They are in roller blind form, very easy to see through from inside, but just look like white roller blinds from outside.

OP - I agree - don't like them at all, but quite like vertical blinds.

We have net curtains on every window that people can look through. We live in a gable end terrace which the front door opens directly on to the street and as it has huge windows we found people couldnt help but to look in when they walked by. I do not want people looking through the windows to see what they can steal tbh lol

I've got net curtains in the back bedroom windows so people on the double decker buses don't get a good look at me over the fences.

I used to live in an area with lots of terraced houses, many houses had nets so people couldn't see in during the day, but then forget at night that once you turn the light on it's the other way round :D

I've just fitted 16 vertical blinds so have a different opinion there (agree with nets though unless you're right on the street or directly overlooked) . Vertical blinds don't collect dust and with centre split and good fabric plus matching header rail fabric covers definitely don't look like an office.

Agreed on net curtains, there is nothing worse that when they have yellowed too. Especially if helped along by a pack of fags a day smoked inside.

Seeing as we're on the subject of alternative window coverings. Does anybody have day and night blinds? I've been looking at them and really like the look on the photos. Not sure what they'd be like to live with though.

Looked at those day and night blinds for our little conservatory / extension thing! But they were too expensive for us , looked good though so if you can handle the cost they look very nice!

I haven't really looked at the price just yet. They will be for our three bedrooms where the windows arn't particularly large so I'm hoping the cost isn't too extortionate.

We will have proper curtains over to block out all the light completely at night anyway.

Did you see them in person? How do they work exactly? The way I'm imagining it is like two fine nets with plastic (?) strips stuck on. You can then either line up the strips so you can see through half of it, or stagger the strips so that you can't see through at all?

My parents have them (Day and night blinds) in some of the rooms.

My thought is that they are the worst of both worlds. You don't get enough light through in the day time and you still need to go close them of a night time.

I thought you could roll them up like an ordinary roller blind though if you're needing more light?

An slightly different alternative to net curtains seems to be these too:

They stop people outside from getting a clear view into the house, and it means you don't need to worry about closing curtains and blinds when you go out. We have them on front windows for privacy, but not on back or side windows.

This, I hate them but only three windows in the house have them so I deal with it.

Net curtains are tacky horrid things. Just get some opaque blinds instead they do the same job but actually look like they belong in the 21st century.

I completely understand the need for privacy, but there are better alternatives.

There's no real alternative to them in many situations. What else reduces what people can see, but still allows you to see out a bit too?

if fitting the many blind/curtain/voile alternatives (including bottom up blinds!) don't work you can add opaque film onto windows up to eye level so light still comes through top but diffuses and obscures the outside looking in aspect. Why can't you fit blinds or curtains?
