What does GD think of this?

The story centres on Amy, an 11-year-old being raised in a traditional Senegalese Muslim household, who is caught between traditional values and internet culture which focuses on the hyper-sexualisation of girls after she joins a group of dancers named ‘the cuties’ at school, and rapidly grows aware of her burgeoning femininity.

Granted I've not watched it and usually I'm pretty liberal about moves etc... but my first thought here is it seems a bit...

Also as if we didn't have enough of an issue with the alt right/QAnon conspiracy theorists who think there is some cabal of senior Hollywood execs & politicians who are secret paedos and meet up in pizza restaurants etc.. This is pure bait for that lot.

In spoiler tags as a courtesy as you might prefer not to open the below at work etc..

How did this get approved by so many people you might be asking? We'll firstly it's French (that explains some of it at least), and I guess it's won an award at Sundance... so Netflix can be a bit edgy and host it along with provocative promotional matterial with those facts as a bit of cover.

Americans gonna American. Its the same when I have watched the documentaries about the child beauty pageants. Leaves me feeling very uncomfortable about the whole thing.

Interesting that in the US they have changed to original poster to the one posted in the OP and the original just had the girls clothed and laughing and playing with each other and the whole synopsis has been re written to something far more sexual than the film actually is.

I reckon Netflix will get a lot of grief over this.

I'm not surprised that they are trying to release it. The media seem to be obsessed in normalizing this degeneracy.

It wouldnt surprise me if this has some backlash from the Muslim community.

Are these online streaming places covered by any regulation board? I am starting to wonder what kind of movies actually get stopped if this is being let through.

Oh that's interesting, deliberate marketing choice to stir up controversey... playing off inevitably similar reactions to Cardi B's WAP. Wonder if Ben Shapiro will go off on one re: this movie.

I guess this thread is contributing to it in a way.

I saw a tweet about this yesterday and couldn't believe what I was reading, then I realised it was French :P

They've somehow managed to offend, muslims, parents, and 'the right' so kudos.

As you mentioned the pizzagate lot have already jumped on it, claiming it's further proof that brands are trying to normalise pedophillia.

I cant see why they have done the poster they have and changed the whole synopsis of the film. If they hadnt done that this would have got zero press or grief. I know they say there is no such thing as bad publicity but arent they risking quite a lot of netflix subscribers in the US cancelling their subs?

Yeah this might be a bit of a bridge too far, but stirring up a bit of controversy and getting people talking about it isn't always a bad move.

Especially if it does then turn out to be a good film and a load of pretentious fim critics and movie buffs can be like:

"... it's (insert pseudointellectual waffle)..."

(^^^ average film studies/media studies grad who has failed at life in general but makes sure to try to assert his superior taste/opinion in this one narrow field... *knew* the Matrix was a trans allegory all along but only posting about it now.... you anti-intellectual normies just wouldn't understand. Mostly found on reddit and tumblr etc.. but there are a couple in the relevant sub forum on here too)

Yeah just watched the trailer, and it's not great...

To be honest though, I don't agree with what most young girls dress like as it is these days. :p

The trailer gave me the sort of vibe like; Mum wants you to become a woman and a mother, do the traditional woman's role of washing, cleaning, cooking etc. but then sort of turns into a women's empowerment story, and that means shaking their asses in scantily clad clothes apparently :p

I kind of feel bad for females to be honest. I'm all for women's rights and equality etc., but it feels like the past 10 years has not been great in turning the whole "women are objects" argument around.

Seen much worse on FB/Instagram with under 10s twerking with the encouragement of their mothers in the background.

I agree, and it's not right. The parents are almost always the problem - either encouraging it, or pushing them away enough that they do things on their own.

I have family members with daughters that have the same issue (i.e. having to monitor their instagrams regularly for perverts and what the kids post on their pages etc.)

Looks like a film about kids, targeted at kids. I'm sure my daughter would enjoy watching this. I expect they've changed the poster for the US to make it more relevant. The whole cheerleading / dance / pageant scene is probably more relevant to that market.

Anyone who thinks cheerleading, dancing an pageants are all about sex needs to spend less time on PornHub.

Really - nothing sexual at all about twerking in skimpy clothing? It's just projection from people (pornhub consumers in this case) with warped minds - twerking is wholesome otherwise?

You not played civ?

US culture is increasingly leaking into UK life.

Meh, I'm not convinced. It's like the BLM thing; half the population seem to think that level of racism is prevalent in the UK.

American culture is disgusting in many areas and it seems to be deteriorating, but it's not necessarily a reflection on UK culture.

No but we tend to be around 5 to 10 years behind so where America is now, is where we will be in 2030.
