Hey guys, just looking into a network camera for at work, a lot of the kids seem to be trashing one of the IT rooms at School on a near daily basis, keyboards destroyed, mice missing, front panels broken etc.. so we are thinking of the posibility of a Network camera to enable us to see whats going on, and hopefully let them know people are watching any bad moves made.

We're not looking for anything too OTT, just something that casn plug into a switch in the network, and be viewed (possibly controlled for panning, too?) by any PC in this office.

Any advice would be great, thanks!

Not always teachers available in a study room, year 12 & 13's are expected to have the maturity needed to not vandalise the rooms. if they insist on treating like they can't be trusted, then they need monitoring!

Axis make nice ceiling dome style PTZ cameras, but not cheap so possibly not what you're after.

There's probably all sorts of legislation around too about what you install in a school and in places with kids so I would get some advice on that front before installing anything at all.

Would be quite satisfying though, catch the little oik on film then send their parents a bill for the replacement of the damaged / stolen equipment. :)

They need to be monitored ?

Why don't you just make everyone sit at specific pc every time and then if there is any damage, say that who ever is sitting there is responsible. There are many ways to do it without resorting to pedo cameras...

you should put some network cameras under the desk so you can get some upskirts...

Hah get a grip, if that's the first thing that comes to your mind then it sounds like you have issues.

If you are working in a local authority school, you will almost certainly have to run it by them. It's big in the news at the moment and installing them without permission might land you in hot water.

Y-Cam?

Or why not a different approach, log of who is using which computer/when?

Iv never heard of a School having a camera in a classroom tbh, then again I did leave school in 2001

I have to echo what people have said. Installing CCTV in schools needs to be agreed with management. That said most schools use CCTV, it's perfectly dooable. You just need to make sure the right boxes are ticked.

Pop over to edugeek.net there are people over there who know chapter and verse about this sort of stuff.

As far as network cams go, Axis are meant to be excellent I've not used them myself. My dad has a Panasonic web cam which was fairly cheap and will pan and tilt.

Also if you dig around on edugeek there are a few solutions to log who's been logged onto a particular computer. It might well be helpful when tracking down who'd done damage.

You quite clearly have no idea what you're talking about if this is the first thing that comes into your head, god knows why it does...

Yeah, absolutely, this is just to get a few ideas of what to go for, its months away, if it even happens, but it was just to get a feel for what people would advise hardware wise, is all!
