Hi -

Firstly apologies in advance for the daft questions. I just cant get my head around this!

I have a modem/router attached to my phone line. It has both wired and wireless options. One computer is attached to the modem/router by an Ethernet cable. I can access the Internet just fine through this.

My second computer has a wireless LAN card. I can connect to the modem/router, but don't seem to be able to either connect to the internet or to connect to the other computer. I am sure this is all basic stuff, and I have tried reading various guides etc - including the one here. But can someone give me an idea how I should be approaching getting this working?

I am on the verge of going out and buying another cable!

Cheers and again apologies for the noobness!

Jon

got a proxy set up in your browser?
Is it a BT homehub? I've seen some really bizarre behaviour on these where it will only allow UDP packets.

Hmm..True. They could also be cached in el DNSo...but then he'd be able to browse.

Oddness.

This problem happens with UKO/easynet/sky sometimes when there's no static IP set by the ISP (even though you've got an IP..it affects the routing in some odd way.

Of course, if that were the case then the other PC wouldn't work either.

What ISP is the OP on?

It is a DNS issue direct your pc to manually get DNS from your router or give tiscali a bell and get some dns server ip's

Well that worked. Popped the Tiscali DNS addresses into the properties for the connection and there was light!

Thanks for that, brilliant!

One problem down, one to go :)

Now how can I network my two PCs together to share files etc? (I told you I didn't understand this - I bet you all believe me now!) One is wired, one is wireless, both joined to the modem/router.

Thanks in advance - Jon

You could change the workgroup of the 2 computers to be the same - then they should be visible through 'My Network Places'.

Right click My Computer > Properties > Computer Name > Change the workgroup to whatever you want to call it.

Thanks again all.

I have put both computers into the same workgroup, but they can't see each other still. Any ideas?

Also, I can alter the address of the DNS server in the properties section of the wireless connection, but for some reason, this seems to be lost every time the PC is rebooted, again has anyone any ideas?

Cheers for all your help - Jon
