Hi Guys,

Looking for some help and advice. Recently i upgraded my home broadband to 1GBs FTTP from BT.

Today i bought a roll of 4pair Cat5e cable and rand it from the router to a Netgear GS305 Gigabit Network switch and then ran a CAT5e cable to my desktop pc.

However, my desktop is still maxing out at about 90-95mbs. Ran the same setup the PS5 and same outcome.

Any help or suggestions? I was thinking it was the CAT5e cable but this is supposed to be rated to 1GB from what i have seen on google.

BT Router > 4Pair Cat5E Cable > NetGeat 305GS (Gigabit Switch) > Cat5e Patch Lead > Desktop PC/PS5

A quick gander suggests that switch is one of the manageable ones, have you by chance entered into the switch and put limiters (100mbps) to each port accidentally? If this was not your original purchase, did whoever you obtained it from put such limiters on when they had it?

So that means the patch cable is likely ok.

Do you get full speed if you plug PC into router with the patch cable?

Similarly try the new cable from router to pc

The Switch I bought was the Netgear GS 305 unmanaged.

90-95 MB/s or Mbps?

Okay, what happens if you connect directly to the router?
Cant plug my desktop in as its 30m away upstairs.
When i connect my laptop to the router with a patch lead its gets upwards of 500mb.
I have spliced the RJ45 ends onto the ends of the CAT5e i ran 3 times each end in case there was a bad connection and no change and the cable was brand new.

Spliced the ends onto the cable? Do you mean you have a 30m run cable, and you've been attaching RJ45 plugs from other cables onto that 30m cable run instead of attaching the RJ45 plugs onto that cable by connecting the wires to each other?

No i ran a new 30m length of Cat5e i bought today.
And crimped two new RJ45 Connectors on each end that i had in the garage, they were unused and been in my toolbox for a few years.
I changed these three times on both ends to ensure it wasn't the crimp connections

Are you sure there is nothing else plugged in between the router and your PC other than the switch? Take a photo of it so we can see the LEDs.

The PC that is showing a 1Gbps link is using a premade patch cable to a Netgear switch, the self-terminated cable is in between the switch and the BT router. We've had no confirmation of the link speed being achieved there.

So the setup in the house currently looks like this:

FTTP Fibre coming through the wall to the ONT.

ONT Plugged into BT Router using Red Cate cable provided into port 5 as told by BT due to it being the older version of the hub.

Router Port 1 Plugged into HIVE heating control

Router Port 2 Cat5e cable plugged in running 30m to Netgear Switch

Netgear Switch Port 1 30m Cat5e cable from Router

Netgear Port 1 Desktop PC

Netgear Port 2 PS5

I have just tried the patch leads connected directly into the router with my laptop and that getting 836mbs.

Desktop PC and PS5 Both receiving 90mb
