I want to test the speed of my old homeplugs vs new homeplugs on my network

I have a pc and can use laptop to test...

What is the best way to test the speed and get values to compare?
 
Transfer huge file between pc and laptop over the connection

*and open task managers networking tab to see how fast it's transferring

Some companies supply a utility which reports connection speed between the plugs. Not all of them do and they are unlikely to work with others.

I am going for the devolo 1200+ Wireless plugs - expensive I know but I am hoping they really increase the speeds I currently have and can stream hd - otherwise I will return them :)
 
Ok guys... Ive tested via lan and my current homeplug (200Mbit Newlink)

I am getting the below is this okay for the 200mbit plugs and will I get more out of the 1200AC homeplugs

so getting 2.5 MB/s isn't too good :D im hoping the 1200ac which uses the earth wire will be quicker

seemed okay to stream 1080p hd movies - ive tried 2 and both were fine
 
its not that fast if you have a gigabit network though and move large files / backup's around. However for internet browsing it would be fine :)
 
We've had them for a while and we're now getting ethernet installed.

They're really quite awful things. They disconnect from each other constantly, the speed is never constant, so one day you'll get 20Mb out of them, the next 1Mb.

I'd honestly advise you to get ethernet if you can.

I've found mine rock solid with good speeds.

Ethernet is always going to be better, but is a big undertaking.

Same, I've used TP-Link for the past few years and they've only dropped twice, once simply needed unplugging and replugging, one required replacement (apparently son spilt tea on the adapter but neglected to mention it until the next day when it broke!). I use them to connect my son's room upstairs into the network so he can play online on Xbox One, 360, PC and utilise Windows Media Centre from my HTPC. The speeds are more than enough for online gaming on our 50Mbps cable connection, and going powerline from wireless completely eliminated the lag in the Xbox Media Centre app.

Provided you go with a decent make, your home wiring isn't very dodgy, and you try to avoid plugging them into surge protectors, I've found power line a great, fast and reliable alternative to wireless. It's never going to be as good as gigabit Ethernet, but for getting to rooms where Ethernet would be too expensive/disruptive to connect, it's a good substitute in my experience.
 
I cant really go lan so that's why im upgrading to the 1200ac homeplugs they should be here tomorrow and will post the speeds - hoping its much better :)

Blame your house wiring, because ultimately that's what's causing the problems.
 
Wireless and plugs have different factors which degrade the signal.

I've had a lousy time with wireless but found plugs to be consistent and adequate to carry my internet connection.
