I want to get a network storage drive and I'm wondering whether it's better to go for an enclosure, like the D-Link ShareCentre 2 Bay Cloud Network Storage Enclosure which is on this week only, or something like a WD MyCloud drive. Is one going to be substantially better than the other? I'm not too clued up on network storage so could do with a little advice

Synology or HP Microserver.

Also some routers have usb ports that guy can connect an external drive up to and use that on the network

The operating system on them is top class, so many things you can do with them beyond just holding storage. There are also a bunch of packages you can install for things like sabnzbd (synocommunity).

Truly a joy to work with. But yes more expensive!

For me it was that I wanted something that just worked out of the box and yes you do pay a premium for that but the other points I considered were size power use multiple user access and on top of this was the rather large list of a pliant that are there for you to install from a media hub to an ftp server to an automated backup solution for everyone in my house and the obvious security of a raid to help reduce the risk of digital data loss photos etc. Now I am more than aware that I can do all of this with a very cheap old ish pic running Linux but I have taken the easy option and I am glad I did as it is a very well thought out device IMO of course :)

I think I'll have to do some reading up. I really only want it as a drive I can put all my music and videos on and access them from any device in the house so they seem a little expensive when compared to what I was considering.

Synology is more expensive because the software is top class and it just works. No tinkering required as it is completely noob friendly.
