Network with a Neighhbour HOW?

So this way will require minimal configuration to the routers and none to the laptops correct?

i still like the bridge idea.......

edit;

considering your knowage on networking, do you really what to be assigening all the pc's and laptops with IP address's and then each time a laptop leaves the network change it to auto and then set back to the static when they get home?

also trying to falut find when your mate saids 'i can get my pc to see yours' might be more toublesome than just restarting the brifge router and reseating the cat5 cables.

thats my rant done.

simply,

your keeping your own networks seperate.

You both have a router connected to the internet. you both still have automatic ip so any other laptops or devices that need IP's can be brought in and out without any IP issues.

All your doing is adding a 'bridge' to another network. (from yours to your mates)

the other methods sujested in this thread will work (no issue with that) but everyone will agree it's really a case of what suits you.

Personly i'd rather have the bridge. It keeps things simple. none of this messing around with subnet masks and ip addresses.

Another way that was mentioned above is about WifI aps. You could stick one outside of your house and one on the other house and point them in the same direction as each other creating a wifi object to transfer files.

Eitha way its up to you and the one that suits you most.

thats the reason i like the bridge. there is less messing around with settings.

it also makes falut finding easier. if they loose connection to each other, it can only be a few things, where as the 2 router method would invole checking the ip's of each machine, checking to make sure the router hadn't lost some settings, ect, ect....

On a personal note;

I wish i had someone living with 100meters of me as this sounds like fun. Just think of the posablities....:):)

Im resurecting this thread cos im eager to get it done, think of the possibilities.

Ive read through the thread again and i think a bridge is the best option, the routers have changed a bit from the original models.

Heres a pic of the current network setups, advice needed on which router to get for the bridge and how to configure.

What was the distance between houses again? I'm inclined to say get another WRT54G, install Tomato on both of them, boost the send/receive powers and bridge the networks.

Sounds like a cool project, keep us posted.

you still have yet to explain how you entend to run this 100 meter Cat5 cable though other people's gardens!!!!!

They going to allow this? I doubt it much, howevever once you accomplish this bit your sorted.

I am confused at some of the replies in this thread. Why don't you just put a 8 switch in house 2 from house 1 with a run of cat5 in between. hmm.

The cable route has yet to be decided but it will either go overhead or around the back gardens, there is wastland and bushes behind the gardens so im not actually running it through other peoples.

I dont want a wireless link, i want a wired cat 5. You say to put a 8 port switch in house 2, how would this work wont they lose there own internet connection. Please edit the diagram to show your suggestion.

If you really are going to persue the cable method round the back of the houses. which in my eyes is still a little dodgy, your going to have to A) Bury the cable where possible and B) Use trunking or a tube to protect it.

Hmm, dont know if this would work, maybe someone would clarify? What about creating two seperate subnets for each network and creating a static route between the two, would that work better? Not sure if you would able to use DHCP then?
