To be fair, Neuromancer came out first, and had that imagery. I'm not sure if Ridley Scott (or Sid Mead who did the design) copied the book descriptions or whether it's coincidence.

The book? Blade Runner came out 2 years prior to Neuromancer didn't it?

I always thought Blade Runner had an aesthetic closer to alien than Syd meads previous work. His style before that was cleaner and sleeker. I think they were all influenced by alien. Then outland..

I guess it's was a melting pot of all that went before..

The movie did. The Philip K. Dick novel Blade Runner is loosely based on was first published in 1968.

I think it's even physically the same location in real life, just blade runner is dark and rainy. I'll see if I can confirm it.

Nope - One is LA and the other Tokyo, although the LA takes from the packed Tokyo streets. Shame, that would have been a neat cross over.

Apologies, you are correct. But I would guess that Gibson started work before the film came out. He certainly wrote "Burning Chrome", which has a similar feel and location (albeit without much description) as Blade Runner, in 1981. Googling suggests that look and feel were coincidental.
