I always thought Blade Runner had an aesthetic closer to alien than Syd meads previous work. His style before that was cleaner and sleeker. I think they were all influenced by alien. Then outland..

I guess it's was a melting pot of all that went before..

There's been a theory developing over time that both are in the same universe...

Scott did Alien then moved straight on to BR, I'm sure the style of the worlds were mentioned the in the very excellent Future Noir book by Paul Sammon but it's been about a decade since i went through that now.

The thing that irks me with that theory is that BR is set a century or so after Alien and there are zero Replicants in the Alien universe, but androids have been a thing for decades.

I would imagine that an android is rather more expensive to create than a genetically engineered human and a greedy, ethically dubious corporation like Weyland Yutani would always go for the most profitable option.

You mean BR is set 100 years before Alien surely?** My personal theory is WY did WY things to Tyrell and stole his Replicant tech, destroyed/refined it, found it impossible to control and went for the Android instead. 2099 brings us past the 2090ish setting of Prometheus so who knows this TV show could be the chance to feed the theory.

**OG BR is 2019. OG Alien is 2122.
